To use your example, considering profit per acre carrots and squash will beat commodity corn any year. The market however only requires a limited amount of carrot and squash acres. If farmers do plant squash or carrots, they loose out on "program payments" directed to a limited list of crops. The market is thus skewed and we are stuck with the system we now find ourselves in.

My point excatly. Farmers must produce what the market wants and with most if not all perishable vegetables, even slight overproduction kills the market. Corn and other grains provide a farmer more marketing options. So farmers plant corn and other grains and lots of it gets fed to livestock. I just don't see the connection where reducing grain production will help poverty-stricken kids.
