BALTIMORE, Dec. 24, 2009 As the rest of Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport bustled with holiday travelers yesterday, its USO Lounge offered military travelers -- many returning home from overseas deployments -- a welcome sanctuary of solace.

USO-Metro USO Lounges at BWI, Reagan and Dulles were open throughout the winter storm to serve 3,587 military travelers! We couldn't have done it without our amazing volunteers! A number of volunteers served 24-hour shifts, many worked throughout the night and several made emergncy supply runs in the middle of the storm to care ...for our troops and their families at area airports. Special thanks to two local businesses - John Plumoff with Edy's Ice Cream who came in Sunday night to hand dip ice cream at BWI and the Odenton, MD Papa John's, which is lead by a Navy veteran who gave USO-Metro a great deal!
USO-Metro volunteers helped lay 1000 wreaths in Arlington Cemetery. USO, Inc. purchased the wreaths from Wreaths Across America. and partnered with the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). 200 families of the fallen joined our volunteers in Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery. Section 60 holds more than 500 gr...aves for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is also where many of the re-patriated remains that came back from Vietnam are placed. There are veterans from other eras there as well, and at least 2 medal of honor recipients.
USO-Metro Thank you to The Boeing Company, which filled the Mobile USO with gifts donated by their employees in the Rosslyn and Crystal City offices for military families in need. Big thanks also to Marines from Henderson Hall assisted USO-Metro in wrapping and packing the gifts!
