TJ Maxx is one of the most profitable retails companies in the country, and has recently reported record profits http://boston.bizjournals.com/boston/s...tories/2009/11/16/daily13.html. The recession has been very good for TJX, the parent company of TJ Maxx, Marshals, AJ Wright, and HomeGoods. Unfortunately, the recession has not been as good for TJ Maxx workers and their families.
Workers at other TJX facilities in New England will also soon enter contract negotiations and will be joining the workers at the Worcester TJ Maxx facility in their call for a fair new contract.
The UNITE HERE New England Joint Board represents over 9,000 workers in the manufacturing, textile and laundry industries, and in distribution, across the six New England states. The New England Joint Board is an affiliate of UNITE HERE which represents workers throughout the U.S. and Canada who work in the hospitality, gaming, food service, manufacturing, textile, laundry, and airport industries.

Hundreds to march through downtown to protect affordable Healthcare
Morgan Stanley-owned hotel's attack on worker health sparks outrage
What: "Oakland Workers Rising" – March to protect healthcare for working families
Where: Rally in front of the Oakland Downtown Marriott, 1001 Broadway, kicks off march at 4.30pm. The ma...rch will move to Frank Ogawa Plaza where we will have another rally. The march will then continue on to our final rally on 22nd Street between Webster and Kaiser Place.
When: Thursday, November 19th, 2009. March begins at 4:30pm in front of Oakland Downtown Marriott, 1001 Broadway.
Who: Elected officials, Hundreds of community allies, faith leaders, the Alameda Labor Council, and Hospitality workers from the Oakland Marriott, Downtown Courtyard Marriott, Claremont, Hilton Oakland Airport, and Oakland Coliseum.
Media Visuals and audio: Marching band, hundreds with colorful picket signs on the streets; Advanced interview opportunities in English, Spanish and Mandarin
Why: In the wake of hundreds of housekeepers walking off the job in San Francisco, over 400 East Bay Hospitality workers and their allies will march through Downtown Oakland in an action to protect affordable healthcare for hard working employees and their families.
Morgan Stanley [NYSE:MS], majority owner of the Claremont Resort and Spa, received $10 Billion in public TARP monies[1] and disclosed last month that it has set aside "$4.96 Billion for its compensation pool for the three months to September"[2]. Yet Pyramid Hotel Group, thei hotel's management company, has proposed to slash health care coverage and eliminate overtime pay for working class Claremont employees going into the holidays.
Aramark, concessions operator of the Oakland Coliseum and A's, has proposed a three year wage freeze as well as a cap to their total contribution of health care so that workers are hit with the entire burden of rising health costs. The Downtown Marriott and Courtyard's management company, Interstate, has proposed to have workers pay hundreds of dollars in medical without raising wages for the first two years of the contract, essentially cutting the amount of money workers have to pay for their rents, mortgages, and children's college tuition. "These corporations are trying to force workers to choose between their homes and their health insurance. That's simply immoral, and we are going to stand up for working families and fight back," said Wei-Ling Huber, President of Unite Here Local 2850.
Unite Here Local 2850 represents over 2,500 hospitality, food service and gaming workers throughout the East Bay, and is the counterpart to San Francisco's Unite Here Local 2.

UNITE HERE!
What: Rally, march and candlelight vigil to support and defend fired hotel workers.
Where: Begins in front of Hilton Garden Inn at 1000 Aguajito Road, Monterey. Ends in front of driveway entrance to Hyatt Regency at One Golf Course Road (Mark Thomas Drive & Sloat Avenue).
When: Wednesday, November 18. Rally with spe...eches begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Hilton, marching to the Hyatt Regency at 5:00 p.m. for a candlelight vigil and prayer at about 5:20 p.m.
Who: Hotel workers and their supporters are fighting back against hotel firings in this recession. The Hilton Garden Inn has fired at least 14 workers since September 22, some of whom have worked there for decades. The Hyatt Corporation recently fired 100 housekeepers at three of its hotels in Boston. Fired workers will participate in the rally, march and candlelight vigil, including Corporina Belis, one of the "Hyatt 100" fired housekeepers, a bilingual immigrant from the Dominican Republic, who was forced from her job at the Boston Hyatt Regency.
Why: Villamor Caacbay, who had worked at the Monterey Hilton as a server for 10 years, said of the company firings, "It's not right. We were working here for a long time." Maria Santos, fired after 12 years as a Hilton laundry worker, said, "I have two kids. I don't know how I am going to help them now."
Corporina Belis, a 62 year old housekeeper who had worked at the Boston Hyatt Regency for 25 years before being fired, said, "I know my job. That's my life, my job. My family depends on my job, and I'm fighting to get it back. I'm going all over the country, if that's what it takes to open the eyes of the people."
UNITE HERE Local 483 Secretary-Treasurer Leonard O'Neill commented, "These firings are cruel and heartless decisions made by people thousands of miles away from the workers. It's heartening to see the Monterey Bay community stand up and say: You don't do that to our people. Hire them back!"
