Thank you to everyone who has participated so far. We are very appreciative of the dialogue and support. I want to be clear, however, University Mall will never lose its local character. We do in fact have several vacancies in the mall and we are aggressively trying to pursue local entrepreneurs to fill the space. Two weeks ago we held a local "Business Opportunity Day" where about twenty local retailers gathered to hear our plans for the mall and to learn about current opportunities to open under very friendly lease terms. While we are very optimistic about filling some space with local entrepreneurs, there just aren't enough of them out there who are ready to open.
American Apparel, among other international retailers mentioned here, are a good fit for the mall because their target demographic lives or goes to school in Chapel Hill. When these non-local stores are sprinkled throughout the mall they actually help local stores tremendously by drawing in shoppers who may come for an American Apparel sale but then discover a great dress half off at Modern Times. We'll never be Southpoint, nor do we want to be. However, that doesn't mean national chains, including Chick-fil-A, don't have a small role to play in making University Mall an eclectic and vibrant place that both serves and reflects the Chapel Hill community. SHOW DESCRIPTION: The Tyndall Galleries are pleased to present our first exhibit of paintings by Graham Auman. A native of Sanford, North Carolina, Auman holds an MFA in Ceramics from Indiana University, School of Fine Arts, Bloomington and a BEDP (Bachelors in Environmental Design, Product Design) from North Carolina ...State University. He completed Independent Study in Ceramics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a Summer Ceramics Program at Alfred University.
Auman has been a Lecturer in Design Fundamentals at the North Carolina State School of Design Artist-in-Residence at the University of Georgia Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy and an Associate Instructor at Indiana University. His paintings are represented in numerous private and corporate collections, including Neiman Marcus, Quintiles Transnational, Duke University Fuqua School of Business and the Renaissance Raleigh Hotel.
“Auman comes from a background in clay, but for many years he's made highly formal objects with delicately nuanced colors distinguishing ‘subject’ and ‘ground.’… Auman creates a pillowy, slightly rippled surface by saturating loosely stretched canvas with resin, onto which he applies hundreds of layers of sheer oil paint which he lets drip to a carefully controlled degree. He turns the canvas as he works, so that the drips run in the four cardinal directions, and create shimmers and sheens of color.”
