As owners of University Mall, we want American Apparel here because we know it will be a great catalyst for attracting other top notch national brands that will mix well with our already top notch local brands s...uch as A Southern Season and Modern Times.

Thank you to everyone who has participated so far. We are very appreciative of the dialogue and support. I want to be clear, however, University Mall will never lose its local character. We do in fact have several vacancies in the mall and we are aggressively trying to pursue local entrepreneurs to fill the space. Two weeks ago we held a local "Business Opportunity Day" where about twenty local retailers gathered to hear our plans for the mall and to learn about current opportunities to open under very friendly lease terms. While we are very optimistic about filling some space with local entrepreneurs, there just aren't enough of them out there who are ready to open.

American Apparel, among other international retailers mentioned here, are a good fit for the mall because their target demographic lives or goes to school in Chapel Hill. When these non-local stores are sprinkled throughout the mall they actually help local stores tremendously by drawing in shoppers who may come for an American Apparel sale but then discover a great dress half off at Modern Times. We'll never be Southpoint, nor do we want to be. However, that doesn't mean national chains, including Chick-fil-A, don't have a small role to play in making University Mall an eclectic and vibrant place that both serves and reflects the Chapel Hill community.
