Uptown Update Gangs tags in alleys and on garage doors is the popular thing this season. Make sure you call 311 and let the operator know its in the alley of (name the address). This photo was just sent in showing a badly tagged garage door just behind Uplift School.

At beat meetings we have been told that the library has a book at the front desk that translates the gang signs. Also officers have mentioned at meetings you can find a lot of info on the internet on gangs. 311 has been taking over a week to 14 days to clean up graffiti due to budget cuts is the reason I have been told. One of the business owners in my neighborhood has bought a product from the hardware store called Graffiti Off to get it off more quickly verses waiting for the city.

"Make sure you call 311 and let the operator know its in the alley of (name the address)." Is that a joke? I called for 2 years and the city did nothing. I finally spackled (they carved it in, as well as tagged) and repainted the door.

Francie Steiner FYI - was just shown a suspect's photograph by ten or so U.S. Marshals in bulletproof vests while out walking the dog on my block (Gunnison between Marine Dr. and Sheridan). Suspect in question was an average looking white guy. Apparently, he is a pedophile, since they said what he did was worse than murder but that I only need be concerned if I were a child. Consider yourselves warned.

Delicious cupcakes and a great selection! They use real ingredients (i.e. butter!) and the ones I've tried are sweet, but not too sweet. The only thing I worry about is the price point--$2.50 for a cupcake in our neighborhood seems a bit much. Good luck Darius!

at about 330 there was fight out front of the truman college doors on wilson. about 20 young black dudes. not sure what it was about, but I walked through it right before someone got hurt.

im not sure if anyone has picked up on this but Ald. Shiller seams to be part of the problem and as far as i am concerned we need a new alderman who will actually help the area as far as getting rid of the drunks and crackheads that are living as her personal registerd voters in the shelters of the uptown area ,that for one should have been spread ... Read Moreout farther apart as well as shut down with all the problems that seam tostem from the locations causing an unsafe living environment for all the law abiding tax payers of the uptown area. any time she is questioned she refuses to answer. i have now called her office about 6x including 311call center for potholes that have giving 3 cars that i know of flat tires in the east alley of the 4700 block of Magnolia ave. just since July and yet that hasn't even been fixed. I do think that some of the 20odd thousand dollars ea year i spend on property /sales tax should be able to take care of 5 pot holes! maybe if more people complain things will change. like when the 4700 blk was flooding from the streets into the yards of the residents each time it rained for well over 6mo last year to the extent of cars getting stuck in 6 or more inches of ice causing car owners to get tow trucks to get them out! these are just a couple of examples of what i have experienced. feel free to point out other areas of concern i know that her office reads this so maybe this will help.and if not just remember she was voted in, and she can/needs to be voted out if she is unable or unwilling to do her job!

Peter How do you think they determine who gets to panhandle in front of Starbucks? Arm wrestling? Draw straws? Seriously though its a tight space and you cant avoid them. No concept of personal space, they always try to touch me. Something needs to be done. I bust my hump for every dollar I make. I'm not giving even a cent away.

If they touch you, it's considered "aggressive panhandling" and that's a crime. Call 911, but you have to be willing to sign an complaint and show up in court.

A couple of weeks ago I was lost looking for an appointment downtown, on Michigan street. This Streetwise salesman screwed with me every time I passed his spot, in front of Walgreens. I told him I don't carry cash. The third time he grabbed my shoulder roughly and demanded I go into Walgreens and buy him a sandwich. He said "You have to help the ... Rest assured I will never, ever buy a copy ever again.

I've also noticed the panhandlers just in a feeding frenzy whenever they have a show at the Aragon. It's kind of a fascinating study in human dysfunction.
