Legends of Tap - an evening of the best and rarest tap dance captured on film.
The feature film, "Stormy Weather" (1943) is loosely based on the life of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and features both Bojangles himself and the incomparable Nicholas Brothers.
The finale, where the Nicholas Brothers leapfrog each other down a... giant staircase into splits was described by Fred Astaire as "the greatest movie musical sequence ever seen".
Before and after the film, VJzoo will be VJing clips featuring the Nicholas Brothers, Eleanor Powell, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Ruby Keeler, Joan Crawford, the Four Step Brothers, the Ritz Brothers, Tip Tap and Toe, Sammy Davis Junior, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, Shirley Temple and Bojangles, Ann Miller, James Cagney, George Raft, George Murphy, Buddy Ebsen, Donald O'Connor, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Clark Gable, Betty Grable, Alice Faye, and of course huge Busby Berkeley numbers.
Tap en pointe! A tap dancing horse! A speed-tap bellhop-girls chorus line! Eleanor Powell as a pinball....
DJing classic and contemporary jazz and swing to get your toes tapping will be VJzoo and DJ An-Teeq aka Michelle Rogers.

Footage from a variety of street and mobile projection we've done around Perth. We actually got picked up by the police when we were doing the mobile projection at around 2am on a weeknight. We were worried they would think of something to book us for - but then they just checked my licence and said they wanted to che...ck we weren't thieves, as we were "driving slowly and pointing a light into buildings" lol! All content used was shot by us - thanks very much to Fliptease, Kimtortion, Sophie Ward, and participants in our unmonumental project at tiger, tiger coffee bar :) Song is Helen "boop-boop-a-doo" Kane's song "Get Out And Get Under The Moon" from circa 1930.

VJzoo A dark, moody remix of two classic German Expressionist films, Der Golem (1920) and Faust (1926), exploring themes of seduction, corruption and redemption. This has been layered with our 'video painting' style, giving a sense of the film melting and burning reminiscent of Bill Morrison's Decasia but without the destruc...tion of archival material ;) Mixed live and recorded for exhibition at z-axis in Saskatchewan, Canada in June 2009.
