We have two copies of the Sentinel from 1992 -- Nov. 21 and Nov. 22. One paper says "Evening Sentinel" while the next day's paper says "Valley Sentinel." Anyone know why this is?

The name changed as part of a move from the Connecticut Post parent company, which took over the Sentinel. Then on Dec. 24 we were all handed pink slips.

Because when the CT post bought the evening sentinel, they changed the name then about 4 months later, they did away with the paper altogether

It was exciting to 'go get the paper' out of the mailbox. Reminds me of my dad.

I delivered that paper too! We had the route in my family for quite a few years.

The Evening Sentinel was delivered by kids after school throughout the Valley. The Post bought the paper, changed the name and put out a version of the Post with the new name on it in the morning. Then just did away with it altogether.

Didn't they run two papers at the time?

At one point they had two editions a day, sounds like the Valley Sentinel might have been the early edition and the Evening Sentinel was the afternoon paper.

Carol's reason makes the most sense. Thanks all.

I'm just surprised that they were still printing two editions at that point. It was a great paper.

Clearly Derby
It probably does, Mark. LOL. I'm hoping that the
Valley Independent Sentinel
will come out soon with an article on the history of redevelopment in Derby. I would love to see the evolution of this over the years. Please say you will!

I worked for the Sentinel then. When CT.Post took over they changed the name without the knowledge of the employees. The next day with so many complaint from the subscriber and employees they knew they made a big mistake and changed it back. The valley residents are very loyal, you should never mess with them.

NO,The Evening Sentinel was not morning/evening paper. Just one in the afternoon. I had a paper route when I was 7 years old. Couldn't play after school because I had to deliver papers! If I brought the paper after 5 pm some of my custome
...
rs would YELL at me! The Bridgeport Post (now CT POST) was an am paper and when they bought The Evening Sentinel there was no longer a need to have 2 papers so the Valley got tossed aside. There was also another paper called the Journal-Courier and that may have been the name of the paper before it was the Bridgeport post/Ct Post. I guess some fact finding can be done on that.

I worked in the circulation dept 1981. Every evening at 5pm, we would begin reading the front page and see how far we got before hitting the first typo. Great fun.

And yes, it was just one edition a day. Usually came off the press 2-3pm. I remember the day Reagan was shot - Bob Pollack ran thru the building yelling "stop the presses!" It was right out of a Frank Capra movie.
