I want to publicly thank Dr. Herbert Schwartz for the years he served as my oncologist. I had a cancerous tumor on my femur that was discovered by accident. I was referred to Dr. Schwartz by my ortho here in Indiana. I had several surgeries, but was declared cancer free a number of years ago. I still believe if not... for Dr. Schwartz, I would have lost my leg. He was always there to listen to my concerns and always had the greatest bedside manner, which means the world to a scared cancer patient. All these years later, I still consider him to be a member of my family. He is a wonderful doctor and human being.Read More

Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Congratulations, Dr. Dell Yarbrough, on award of not one, but two, federal Challenge Grants for the study of head and neck cancer. Our faculty really took the stimulus funding opportunity seriously.

Are you ready? OB/Gyn group issues new guidelines for Pap smears that all women should like. Start slightly later and less frequent. This isn't like the mammography controversy. Cervical cancers are slow growing. Known to be caused -- in most if not all cases -- by infection with HPV. And the guidelines had already bee...n changing to reduce frequency if women had several "all-clear" tests in a row. NPR's story was a good one. Listen to audio at link below.Read More

I think Children's cancer should get more time too. You hear about it a couple of weeks into September, gold ribbons and all start showing up and then all of the sudden those are down and pink are up. What is the answer?

Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Hitting 13-year-olds in their wallets with higher tax on cigs could save them a world of hurt later on, Dr. David Carbone suggests in a Tennessean op/ed.

The ongoing debate over health-care reform represents a controversy over how to best maintain the health of this country, and it is taking place during a time of economic downturn that serves to underscore the rising costs of providing health care.

I carried an unopened pack for a year. The big thing with me and a lot of others is this paranoid feeling you get when you know you are going to run out. My grandfather did it and it worked for him so I thought I would give it a chance. Guess I could have give it to them if I got mugged....Maybe we ought to look into maybe they are addicted too. Who's to know how long that takes!

Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center In case you haven't had enough of the mammography controversy, here's a look at the historical and political perspective from the Washington Post. For those us in and around the cancer community for a while, this is feeling a little like deja vu all over again.

In 1997, a federal committee of medical experts recommended against routine mammograms for women in their 40s, sparking a political uproar that led to congressional hearings and a unanimous Senate vote challenging the findings.

Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center supports screening mammography annually beginning at 40 and continuing as long as a women is in good general health. We have prepared a Q&A to help you make sense of the controversy, and we'll keep you posted if anything changes. Currently, we believe there is insufficient evidence to wa...rrant changing current recommendations. You should always discuss fully the limitations as well as the benefits of any screening test.Read More

I want 2 thank Dr. Kevin Palka & staff 4 their work via my fiance. We called last week & asked 2 be called 2 c what their plans were & in ONE day, Dr.Palka called she wasnt here I asked if he cld call back a 2nd time & he called.I thought we wouldnt get a 2nd call since she missed the 1st,but we did which may seem silly... 2 some but my experience w/ MDs & other family members has been less than impressive. In 2008 my Gram died of comp.from a 3x by-pass in Phila.Pa.,which is where I'm from. The Mds & staff were so uncaring 4 my Gram & family it was really sad.The lack of human compassion was an emotional hell i wish on noone. My only comfort is she is no longer in their care! You can understand my surprise 2 be involved with a caring MD such as Dr.Palka.We are not done, but thanks 2 Dr.Palka I am sure that it will be alright. Thanks Dr.Palka 4 being a diligent & more a CARING HUMAN BEING,&4making sure2keep my love here4years 2comeRead More

Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Kudos to Gail Kerr at the Tennessean for sharing her story about kicking the habit and encouraging others to do so for the Great American Smokeout. (By the way, we know from first-hand experience that her description of the newsroom back in the day is spot-on.)

Source: www.tennessean.com
Everybody smoked, cussed and drank. It was marvelous. I learned a lot of valuable lessons, some terrific words I couldn't use at home, and picked up a few bad habits. Smoking being number one on that list.

I'm with you Connie. I used gum, patches, suckers, crocheting anything that worked. Somedays it is still not easy but it does get better. It does make it easier since so many places are non-smoking now so there is that to look forward to. Best of luck to everyone!
