Vietnamese American Heritage Foundation

We are a group dedicated to collecting, recording, and documenting the stories of the thousands upon thousands of Vietnamese Americans who fled Vietnam in the years following the Vietnam War, which ended in 1975.

This effort is extremely important, so that we may be able to preserve this rich heritage for future generations of Americans who wish to learn more about their past. We must document their stories before they pass on, and it becomes too late.

America has always looked upon the Vietnam War from the American Soldier’s perspective, and our project aspires to augment this with a great story of compassion and hope. The mass migration by the hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese Americans affected and dominated American public policy for much of the 70’s and 80’s. Their impact on America has been absolutely crucial to our growth as a nation, and has added one more chapter in the ongoing story of the greatest melting pot of the world. Today there may be as many as 500,000 Vietnamese Americans living in Texas, participating in all sectors of economy in our state.

The Vietnamese American Heritage Foundation (VAHF) was founded in 2004 with the goal of restoring the lost identity. We aim to improve awareness about Vietnamese Americans by collecting, preserving, promoting, and celebrating Vietnamese American history and heritage. Unfortunately, many witnesses who were alive during the war are aging, so we must do it quickly and diligently before this valuable history is lost.

Every immigrant who has made America their home has a story to tell- about the reasons why they immigrated, the hardships of their journey, the challenges of living in a new place, and the dreams they hold for the future. Vietnamese American community members also tell a diverse array of stories about their migrant experiences and their impressions of their adopted home in Texas. (read less)
