Village Books in Fairhaven The NYT blog Paper Cuts often features a particular author's music list, which we think is pretty cool. What would be on your list? (anything by The Books, perhaps? Or maybe "Paperback Writer?") http://bit.ly/7wxoCH

I have a theory that music never sounds as good as when you first discover it. This happened to me, as I’m sure it did for many, when I was a teenager. Sure, I had listened to music before — I was obsessed ...

Village Books in Fairhaven One of our favorite times is when our children's book buyer tells us about her Verklempt Books of the Year at the December staff meeting. This year, she's sharing them with you on the Village Books Blog: http://bit.ly/8kPXfI

One of the greatest things about Village Books is tradition (almost 30 years worth!). And one of my favorite traditions is actually one that customers never see--the tradition of the “Verklempt Books of the Year.” Every year, I choose books...

Village Books in Fairhaven Recently read this post on How Sad is too Sad in Children's books and it made me think of my experiences of reading Bridge to Terabithia & Where the Red Fern Grows in grade school (where I had to step outside the classroom because I was crying so hard--I'm not afraid to admit that). Is there such a thing as too sad whe...n it comes to children's book? http://bit.ly/8PICDw

I’ve been pondering this topic lately because I finally read Bridge to Terabithia over Thanksgiving (I know, I know, just now!? But I had a bit of a one-track mind as a child, and because of it I missed out on a lot of great books the first time around. ...

That's a good question. I know there were books and movies that were so upseting to me as a child that their memories still disturb me to this day. But I don't know whether that means I should have been sheltered from them.

Even though Where the Red Fern Grows made me cry as a child, I still liked it enough to reread it multiple times. Another tearjerker for me was a book called Goodnight, Mr. Tom - I love that one so much I hunted it down as an adult just so I could read it again. I don't think we need to protect children from reading this kind of heartfelt story - the tears are natural and meaningful.

Village Books in Fairhaven Sometimes there's a book I simply can't get through. Sometimes I feel like I can tell when an author has written sentences based on equations on how to write a good sentence, rather than writing from the heart. That instantly turns me off and I can't read any further. So we want to know, what makes you put down a book?

To me the characters are the key to a good book. If the author provides no depth, which allows a reader to understand them and empathize with their plight, I find the book uninteresting and a difficult to complete.

maybe authors are simply at various stages of ability (personally and professionally) while trying to write about what they think or feel. it is up to us to discern - and what appeals is so subjective, isn't it? I like long, beautiful and detailed sentences and dense writing - or spare and elegant, when it can be found - whether from the head, heart or both.
