On 6 February 2009 in Pastoria, VA, Trooper Johnson rescued a 3-year old girl trapped inside a wrecked vehicle engulfed in flames.

Virginia State Police From Friday (Dec. 18) through midnight Sunday (Dec. 20), Virginia State Police emergency dispatchers logged at least 16,042 calls for service. Troopers statewide responded to 3,237 traffic crashes and 3,567 disabled vehicles during the 36-hour period.

Virginia State Police Operation Air, Land & Speed operations for the year yielded a total of 114,199 arrests and summonses statewide.

Virginia State Police Operation Air, Land & Speed along I-66: state police issued 338 summonses and/or arrests. Troopers cited 149 drivers for speeding, 40 for reckless driving and 15 individuals for safety belt citations.

Virginia State Police Operation Air, Land & Speed netted 1,926 violations along I-64. State police cited 824 for speeding, stopped 186 drivers for reckless driving and cited 90 individuals for safety belt violations. Troopers arrested three drunk drivers and made 11 drug/felony arrests.

Virginia State Police Thanksgiving weekend summonses and/or arrests by Virginia State Police: 10,459 for speeding; 2,657 for reckless driving; 132 for driving under the influence; and 6,695 for other hazardous violations.

Virginia State Police Last year, 12 people died in traffic crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday. In 2007, 19 were killed; 16 were killed in 2006; 20 in 2005; and 19 in 2004.

Virginia State Police During the 2008 Thanksgiving holiday, state police cited 915 safety belt violations and 220 child restraint violations. Troopers also took 188 impaired drivers off the road, and stopped 9,628 speeders and 2,815 reckless drivers.

Virginia State Police So far this year (January 2009 – October 2009), Virginia State Police have cited 24,567 adults and teenagers for failing to obey the law and use a seat belt. Another 6,422 summonses have been issued for adults failing to properly secure a child or infant in a child/booster seat.
