Harper Voyager KJ Taylor, author of The Dark Griffin, analyses building a character and gives an example of how she builds character profiles.

During my teenage years, I dealt with my peers in a very simple, direct way: I ignored them. I don’t think I said more than two words to anyone until I became a high school senior, and to this day I can barely remember the names or even the faces of most of my fellows. ...

I find it depends on whether your MS is driven simply by characters backgrounds, or the events they are swept up in..

Harper Voyager Author Kim Falconer discusses the role of gender in speculative fiction - and how a story's themes and plot may change when a character's gender is swapped.

Source: voyageronline.wordpress.com
A Writer Goes on a Journey calls Twilight clichéd, and considering the sexist views throughout the series, it’s not hard to see why. The story revolves around a helpless heroine who is constantly in need of rescue by supernatural men. ...

Great comments guys. Much appreciated. Mostly I think this exercise allows us to see what kinds of actions, goals and limitations we place on the protagonists because of gender--again the question is, does gender define our character or is it a performance?

Tolkien (who is a hero of mine both for his fiction and essays) created Middle Earth and peopled it--and many of the gender roles mirrored the cultural constructs of the times. I'm not saying it's right or wrong--I'm saying, let's look at the way we write men and women. Let's examine how we think about gender and see if our portrayals match our beliefs.

Sometimes the things we think are habitual...unconscious patterns like 'default settings'. I say, as writers, let's be deliberate about what we're creating whether it is traditional or exploratory.... Read More

Harper Voyager Author Mary Victoria on her new series - which starts in 2010 - the entire story is set in a tree ... and sounds amazing!

One of the hardest things I've had to learn as an author is the art of summing up, concisely and in a nutshell, "what this book is about." I say "had to learn," but really I haven't learned it yet and am muddling it out as I go along. ...

I agree it isn't easy to sum up the novel concisely. There is a difference between writing a synopsis and a story outline.
The outline is more structured.
