Two
Animal Control Officers braved a cold, wet, cramped tunnel to save a
deer in
distress.On
Friday afternoon ACOs Shawn Covington and Ed Owens responded to a
trapped deer call in Georgetown. A
young doe had somehow wondered into a small tunnel along a canal wall
and would
not come out. It was a frigid day and
temps were g...oing to be close to zero overnight, and the Officers knew
the
animal could potentially freeze to death, if she were not removed from
the tunnel
Luckily
there were some construction workers nearby who were willing to lend a
hand in
the rescue. They gave the Officers hip waders, so they could enter the
wet
tunnel and stay dry. The
tunnel, just a few feet wide was tough to navigate. It was
filled with filthy frigid water and
was not built for two grown men, let alone a deer! Officers Owens and
Covington
crawled on their hands and knees through the tunnel to get to the doe.
Once they reached the animal, ACO Covington
tranquilized the deer and ACO Owens kept her head above water. The
two officers then carefully carried the
deer out of the tunnel and returned her safely to the woods nearby.
And because they went
above and beyond
their call of duty, both Officers Owens and Covington received letters
of commendation from the Washington Humane Society.

The 9th Annual Sugar & Champagne
Affair, held at The Ritz-Carlton, Washington
DC, was a huge success. Last night’s event was the biggest and best
Sugar
& Champagne Affair to date. The event honored our Human Law
Enforcement officers, Animal Control Officers, and Humane Educators who
serve
the people and animals of the Dist...rict.
More than 400
guests and their four legged friends were treated to gourmet desserts
and
cocktails, and of course champagne! This year’s new VIP Chef’s Tasting
room was a huge hit. Guests sampled savory treats and pasta creations
from the
DC area’s top chefs.
WHS would
like give a very special thanks to Ellen and Todd Gray of Equinox
Restaurant
and Salamander Hospitality for hosting the event. They have truly put
their ‘heart and soul’ into this event for nine years, and have made
