I hate to have to post this, but there's been one confirmed case of a cat being infected with H1N1 after being exposed to infected humans. This means that if you or a family member has H1N1, there's a risk, however slight, to your cat(s). A few ferrets have been infected as well. The pets are being infected by peopl...e, not the other way around! Don't let the media twist this story to make cats seem dangerous: an indoor cat can't possibly be spontaneously infected with something like H1N1 because the cat has no contact with people outside the home. I'm attaching a link to Dr. Khuly's excellent blog entry on the topic, with links to the AVMA's statement about the case. No word on any dogs getting sick yet, but be cautious. If you come down with anything flu-like, please be extra-protective of your pets, especially the young, elderly, and immune-compromised.Read More

Yesterday’s email inbox ding-dinged repeatedly with email alerts from a variety of sources, all urging me to look into the recent American Veterinary Medical Association advisory on H1N1. The Internet is abuzz with the news: One Iowa cat was confirmed to have been infected with H1N1.

We are sad to announce that we have likely lost our home of 9 years. While we have a few legal options still open to us, I need to prepare for the likelihood of relocating in the very near future. We're willing to move anywhere in North America if it will keep our sanctuary safe. If you have any ideas on an affordab...le residence that will allow us to keep our rescue running, *please* email me: director@weepaws.org.Read More

Damn. :( Seattle would be ridiculously high and I know you have friends in more affordable places. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works out for you guys.

Yeah, we were wrong about those "legal options"... there's a Nevada law that should have helped us renegotiate the mortgage, but we missed qualifying for it by about two weeks. Maybe the new owner will allow us to rent for a while so we don't have to rush out? I have no idea. Scary to think we may have to move in as little as 3 weeks, but no worries about the animals -- they'll all be coming along.

Wee Paws Animal Sanctuary Took three cats (two boys and one girl) to the vet today to be tested for urinary tract infections. We'd seen both boys spray, which was not normal behavior, and we figured they were telling us they were in pain. We hadn't seen the girl spray, but she was always lingering near the scene of the crime. The verdict? The boys were fine, but the girl had a uti. Thank goodness for Urine Off!

My favorite thing is a prescription for cats (and dogs who won't gobble down any/everything), Convenia. It's a one-time injectable antibiotic - if you have ever tried to medicate a cat that didn't want to be medicated, you know how wonderful it is to not have to deal with the biting, foaming at the mouth, ginormous strands of grotesque drool that cats decorate rooms with as if they're streamers. Some of the drooling has to be seen to be believed.

When Leigh-Ann was gone once, all the cats got sick and I had to medicate them - they all drooled something fierce...and they traveled throughout the house flinging it to and fro. It was a bit like this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpf0UunXlIY), only add 12 cats and running while foaming/drooling. Twice a day for two weeks, I think. Ugh.

Wee Paws Animal Sanctuary Took this photo of Sugar Ray just a couple of hours ago. Can you tell how much better he looks than when he first arrived here in August? He's gained weight and isn't just a bag of bones, he's walking properly, and the missing hair on his nose has grown back in. He spends most of his time sleeping under the edge of the bed, attempting to snack on the toes of passersby.

Better late than never, but we do have squirt bottles. For most of the cats, it just takes a shake of the bottle and they run. Tie can be squirted until wet and will leave the other cats alone when he's good & ready. Bing will fly over the baby gate in the bedroom if she just hears the bottle shaken at another cat. With Sugar Ray, there isn't ... Read Moreany time to squirt him when he takes a chomp at my toes. I'm just shocked and then it's over.

Sugar Ray has been coming out more and more these days. One day I hope that we'll be able to pet him, too. ;) -Nancy

You have good taste, Laryssa :) He's getting much less fearful with each passing day, and yesterday he even purred while Nancy was holding him. My only complaint is that he allows Abby Cadabby to beat him up when they play, and I'd been hoping that he would be the one to teach her some manners.

Wee Paws Animal Sanctuary Abby Cadabby LOVES her new playmate, Oscar. He's a sweet boy with long eyelashes... what's not to love? You haven't seen photos of him yet because I need to feed a whopping 31 animals every day, many of which are refusing to eat, or vomiting after eating, or wanting human company while they graze on their meal over the course of 30 minutes. The day feels longer than 24 hours.

Well, it's not 31 cats, it's only 21 cats. And 4 dogs, and 6 parrots. The dogs and parrots (I almost wrote, "carrots") barely count in the grand scheme of things, it's the cats that consume so much energy. I can't wait to adopt out half a dozen of them, and I'm sure they can't wait to get out of here, either.

Laine, we're in Nevada.

Wee Paws Animal Sanctuary We got another kitten via the vet's office yesterday, a grubby little boy who was found on a freeway off-ramp. In honor of this month's "Sesame Street" theme, he's been named "Oscar" (although he looks a bit like an "Ernie", too). He's dirty and terrified, but his Mom fed him well so he's otherwise healthy. Pics to follow soon!

Oscar's coloring is odd. He looks dirty, but at the same time, the color is really even. He'd look amazing if he stayed this way. He and Abby Cadabby were playing downstairs a few hours ago, so I think they're getting along okay. She needs someone to boss her around a bit and teach her not to bite, so I hope he'll do that. Betty Lou wants ... Read Morenothing to do with either of them. Oscar is a real screamer... it wouldn't surprise me if his cat Mom shows up on our porch to claim him because she could hear him yelling.

Wee Paws Animal Sanctuary Our senior kitty, Derek (age somewhere between 12 and 18), has been nauseated and unwilling to eat since Sunday. Took him to the vet today where he was given fluids, antibiotics, and anti-nausea meds. His blood work was excellent, x-rays were fine, so we have no idea what's wrong (except for a bladder infection). Poor guy still won't eat tonight. Please send Derek some cyber hunger pangs!

Cricket - our terrier mix. A ball of energy, adorable, occasionally yappy & annoying, good with cats once she meets them three or four times (she ALWAYS knows when it's a new one <sigh>), and loves to sit down next to you on the floor.

Phoenix - who was saved 30 minutes before the deadline at the shelter. Yikes! Henc...e the name... She has awful skin allergies, eye problems, and has had numerous surgeries to fix damages she picked up during her days on the road with The Merry Pranksters. Too much LSD, corn, and fox tails (in her ears), not enough good food and grooming, which we've tried to fix. Phoenix is the calmest dog ever, even when a dog 6x her size is trying to eat her. She's probably a Buddhist. It's too bad that she's always had skin problems, because she loooooves people and would've been a great therapy dog. Alas, a stinky & greasy therapy dog is not ideal. We love her nevertheless - she's been through SO much, yet she rarely complains...unlike me.Read More
