"I had some friends read my book, and they thought it was good."We've heard this refrain at Wheatmark many times, usually when the subject of copyediting comes up...

Sometimes I wonder how people did write a book 100 years ago - I heard of authors writing on pieces of paper or even napkins. They would then give the entire pack to a typist, who would type everything out for the printers. 200 yrs ago, writing was done with a pencil - many ancient books are full of typos. In this day and age, it is in many cases ... See Morenot the content that counts, but the removal of spelling mistakes... There sure are a few of those in my books too! That shouldn't stop you from publishing though.

In fact, it is mostly editors that tell you that you should get a book edited - not that they aren't completely unbiased or (financially) neutral ;-)

You stand at the doorway of your favorite coffeehouse, scanning the area for your friend. Julie is tucked away at a corner table, reading a paperback. She doesn’t notice you until you take the seat across from her."Oh, sorry!" she says. "I've been completely engrossed in this novel. ...

I certainly understand about getting our writing out there when we're at our age. You want to enjoy seeing your work appreciated! Self-publishing does seem to be the way to go, if there was just an option that was inexpensive so that we didn't have to break the bank to do it. I lucked out on my 3rd book and got a $200 package and my beautiful book is now out there so that I can promote it! Enjoyed the article!!!!

I resonate on the age issue. My third novel will be out soon and so far I've nothing but praise for Wheatmark. The marketing task awaits—and has already begun. Wheatmark is offering many great suggestions. Thanks for your comments.

Anna L. Walls You could say that I've been burned by a self publisher. What have you to offer that's different? Sorry, I'd have sent you a private note either here or there but I couldn't see how.

Recently I began an experiment to help in my writing endeavors. I've been writing a book about my quirky experiences working as a small town newspaper reporter, which I did for 10 years before moving to Tucson. I decided it might benefit me to see what others think about the project...

David Hi, my name is David and I'm a student at ASU. I'm actually looking to go into the publishing field after I graduate. I'm taking a Writing for Professions class and I have to interview someone in the editing/publishing arena, and since you're local and successful I was wondering if I could email you a couple of questio...ns about the industry for my project. Any help you can give me would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Linda Rae Blair I've been trying to find an agent to get my book to a "real" publisher and wow did I get some nasty responses. One guy told me that there is no room for the "amateur" in this business anymore and I won't find an agent to take on a self-published book. I thought I was going to find an agent/publisher that would take on... my next two projects now underway...but if they aren't interested in self-published books, should I only submit once a project is done and copywrited to get someone to show interest? Suggestions?

Don't overestimate the reach of an agent and a publisher vis-a-vis your own author platform! Not even they can replace you. You'd be surprised what you can do just by making sure you're targeting the right audience. Here's free advice: http://www.wheatmark.com/free-book-marketing-workbook.cfm
