Shawn Beer

Shawn Beer I was thinking of upgrading my service through wirefly. I am on a family talk plan through at&t with my wife and every once in a while we like to switch phones with each other for a little change. I was wondering if that is ok to do with the phones we get through Wirefly so as to not break the Equipment discount policy or is that a violation. Thank You.

Great question, Shawn. This should not be a problem; but it deserves some explanation.

First of all, the only way Wirefly would know that you broke the Equipment Discount policy is if AT&T reports to us that you deactivated your line or your features.

Now technically, doing what you described could break the equipment discount policy. For example, if one of your lines has PDA/Smartphone features and the other is a plain vanilla flip phone with no data, then AT&T might not like it if you move things around. If you have similar phones and features on both lines (such as 2 BlackBerrys), then it's more likely AT&T won't have an issue with it.... Read More

So why did I say that it should not be a problem? Because we would never invoke the Equipment Discount without investigating first. Let's say AT&T reported to Wirefly that they weren't going to pay us for your line because you had deactivated your features. We would try to contact you to find out what happened. If it turns out that you are still a happy, paying AT&T customer, and you HAVEN'T deactivated those features, then we go back to AT&T to get them to pay us, rather than bothering you further.

The Equipment Discount is protection against people trying to truly scam and steal from Wirefly. If that doesn't describe you, then you shouldn't worry about it.

Ok, I knew there had to be some "scamish" aspect to all of this. Here is the gripe. I can upgrade to the AT&T HTC Pure with an Individual plan for $59.99 for the plan plus $30 for the Data plan. So I think I have the Family Talk 700 which is $69.99 plus $30 for the Data plan.

NOPE! [Here comes the UP SALE] I call i...n and they say no because for the Family plan I have to sign up for at least 6 month for the 1400 minute plan for 6 months. Family Talk 1400 is $89.99. So now I am up from $49 for the phone to $120. (6 months times the $20 increase in the plan)

Amazonwireless is the way to go; no confusion and for $74.99 I get to keep my existing Family Talk 700 plan. As a part of the checkout process you select "keep my existing plan." You get free 2 day shipping. It took at of two minutes.

You are correct. The HTC Pure is available at Wirefly for $49.99 with an upgrade ($25 cheaper than those other guys) with free FedEx shipping, but at the moment we don't have this price available with the Family Talk 700 plan. We try to make this transparent and hope it doesn't appear "scamish". Wirefly seeks to offer cell phones at the lowest ... Read Moreprice points possible. There are some rates plans where AT&T pays us less, and for very expensive phones such as the HTC Pure, we have to choose between raising the price of the phone, or not offering those plans with that phone. Unfortunately, when we offer the phones at different prices based on the rate plan, we have found that people try to scam US -- by taking the more expensive plan, then cancelling it. It sounds as if our agent did not do a very good job of explaining things. We do appreciate this feedback as we work to continuously improve our customer experience.

Peng, it sounds as if the carrier has not approved your order without verifying some information on your credit application. Please call the number provided. You can be sure we are eager to get your phone in your hands as soon as possible, but your phone cannot be activated until the carrier approves your application. This happens sometimes when you are applying for a new account and have insufficient credit history. Thanks!
