Women of the ELCA

Women of the ELCA Every now and then we hear a story about Jesus or Mary showing up in something like a grilled cheese sandwich. Are they trying to talk to us by appearing in our food and in water stains on highway underpasses? Our latest blog post at http://blogs.elca.org/women/ ponders seeing the divine a bit too literally in everyday things.

Judy Lang

Judy Lang Thanks for all the resources you provide. I'm looking forward to TGP gathering this month.

Thanks, Judy (and Carol, too, down the comment line a few). We're always planning ahead for future resources. Are there particular topics or needs you have?

I was so very fortunate that my grandmother, Goldie Burk Wynn, wrote a journal in which to "show how the hand of God has worked in her life" and to share her faith. What a gift. As years go by, I can refresh my memory my reading her journal and be reminded how faithful God is.

Congratulations to our Lutheran sister, Margot Kaessman who was just electdd today to chair the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD). She's the first woman to do this -- and at 51 she's the youngest chair of the EKD council.

Read more about this at http://www.elca.org/Who-We-Are/Our-Three-Expressions/Churchwide-Organizat...ion/Communication-Services/News/Releases.aspx?a=4330.

This is LPB and I'm in Switzerland at the moment with Lutheran women from around the globe and there was much rejoicing here this morning when we heard the news!

Congratulations to our Lutheran sister, Leymah Gwobee for having been recognized by the Gruber Foundation for her incredible leadership in bringing peace to Liberia.

Have you seen the film about this peace effort, Pray The Devil Back To Hell? If not, go to http://www.praythedevilbacktohell.com/v3/ and find a local scre...ening or find out how to purchase a copy of the film.

Women of the ELCA Over on our blog (http://blogs.elca.org/women/) we're talking about how Lutheran women serve their neighbors. Come on over and let us know what you're doing in your congregation to serve your neighbors, whether they are neighbors that live around the block or on the next farm or somewhere around the globe.

Sunday I learned that our church has only 60 members of record. Still this summer we helped with a program that provided lunches to school-age children during the week. We contribute to a community food pantry. A small group of women make quilts. They usually end with a quilt made per each woman who attends the meeting. Another group makes ... Read Moreturbans and I crochet caps for cancer patients. We contribute to a couple living in northern Thailand as missionaries and who are from our area. We contribute to a mission project in Rwanda and some other charities. We provide a place for supervised visits of children under a court order. We host a Christmas party for Head Start children.

So many women in this organization work against human trafficking. The Lutheran World Federation council is meeting 22-27 October with the theme "Upholding Human Dignity: Confronting Human Trafficking." Read more at http://www.lutheranworld.org/News/LWI/EN/2417.EN.html. Anxious to see what we can learn from the global ...communion to help in our ministries here.

Are the women in your congregation working against human trafficking? What are you doing? How could the churchwide organization assist you in this ministry?

Lord of Love, Omaha, always takes up the thankoffering during worship services the Sunday before Thanksgiving, incorporating part of the Thankoffering service in with the regular service. But PTL, this year's worship planning team decided to use the entire service. Also Nov. 8 is Women's Ministry Day at our church. We will be recognized at both ... Read Moreservices with our NSWO president (and member of LOL) bringing a temple talk, and the new ministry team will be introduced at the 2nd service (we just changed from P/Sec'y/Treas format to team format, officially approving new constitution and bylaws on Saturday. We will also have a display about our ministry in the narthex. We give thanks to God!

I say that, thanks to becoming part of this wonderful group of women, I survived falling into the depths of homesickness when we relocated to FL from OH in 1995! Thanks to Sandy, a co-worker at my new job who recognized me as a new member at her church, for inviting me to her circle! We, as women, share our heads, hearts, and hands in a relationship with each other and with our Lord as each of us grow according to the plan God has for each and every one of us!
