Modesty always represents fraud. Either people are wrong about how great you are, or you are pretending not think you're great, or you're wrong about how non-great you are.

Yes, his going from "No nation building" to neocon sociopath was one of the most blatant and insane reversals since FDR ran on balancing the budget and staying out of WWII.

The actual problem with our failing health care system is that consumers have no control over it. Already, too much is paid for by middlemen like insurance companies and government. If Americans on...more

I made a statement similar to this one to some Brit on an American Health care forum, to which he responded with an emotionalist diatribe about us "not caring" about our poor. He then went on to compare laissez-faire capitalism to feudalism and serfdom. Judging by the egregious nanny state over there, I guess they believe they can't live without some form of government control over their lives.

Well, there has been a sort of natural selection process for years, where anyone with any sense of self-confidence and independence is more likely to move to the New World, and the peasant-minded sheeple are more likely to stay behind.

By now, there is almost certainly a both behavioral and genetic tendency to be submissive authority-worshipers in Europe, and rugged individualists (by comparison), here.

This article proves your point. Apparently the UK government thinks that 1984 was an instruction manual.

Words of the Sentient:
Roaming the world as a foreign correspondent for more than a decade, I was able to observe how a variety of vastly different nations organized themselves economically.

The inescapable conclusion was that no politician anywhere on the planet has ...ever actually created a rupee's worth of prosperity.

The typical second earner in a household does not even bring home enough to pay for the first earner's taxes...and yet we wonder why "greedy" parents spend all day working, instead of spending the family time that reduces teen problems and produces better adults later?

The increasing obsession with safety in the US has the opposite effect of the one intended. As with a mother determined to keep her child from all pain, the actual result is greater danger, more harm, and less actual living and happiness.

I forgot to edit the above default description to be:

NOAA has reported each of the last three years as "one of the ten warmest in history", but fail to mention that each has been colder than the last, in an accellerating downward trend. 2008 was the year coldest since 2000. Why spin the data to make it sound worse than it is?

That’s how, for example, car insurance works. If you’re careful and lucky, you’ll “waste” money on it your whole life, and never need to make a claim. You are just pooling a risk with everyone else, and only a few of you should need to cash it in, per year.

We’re told by teachers, politicians, and the media that unions are the best thing ever to happen to people who work. Without them, we’d all be working 80 hour weeks, for pennies per hour, and dying by 30 from how dangerous the conditions are.
