Mark DeJong - saxophone
Steve Hudson - piano
Simon Fisk - bass
David Freema...n - percussion
Jerome Jennings - drums
Discover Mark Dejong! Mark is a saxophonist, composer and band leader, and a founding member of the Outer Bridge Ensemble.
With the release of his debut album "The Unknown," Mark steps up as an exciting, thoughtful performer and band leader.
A veteran of the recording studio and concert stage, Mark has gathered some of the finest musicians into a tight framework of collective musicianship, interaction and improvisation. Their live shows bring the excitement, communication and nuance that is only possible after years of playing together.
Recorded at Peter Karl Studios in Brooklyn, NY, "The Unknown" features six of DeJong's original compositions, offering a compelling mix of funky bass lines, odd-meter arranging, infectious grooves and hard-hitting yet cohesive solos.
"The Unknown" made its debut at number one on CJSR's jazz charts in Edmonton, and spent 13 weeks in the Top 10 on the Canadian campus and community radio jazz charts. It earned the number two spot in the Top 20 of 2008!
Mark has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan and has shared the stage with such luminaries as Ray Charles, Rob McConnell, Lenny Pickett, Hugh Fraser, Kenny Wheeler and Sean Jones. An alumni of the renowned Banff Jazz Orchestra Workshop, Mark is active as a performer, clinician and educator across Canada.
The current tour will include numerous performances in western Canada, including this show at the Yardbird Jazz Festival.
Past performance highlights include opening for the Kenny Werner Quintet (2009) and the John Scofield Trio at the Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival (2008). The 2008 set was recorded by CBC for national broadcast, and is available at CBC concerts on demand. The group has also performed at numerous clubs in New York City, and visited Italy in November and March 2008. They played the Ottawa International Jazz Festival in 2007 and toured western Canada in 2006.
"Mark DeJong is one of the finest tenor players working in the jazz mainstream, a fact that's concealed by his Saskatoon residence. His playing is imaginative and grounded, thoughtful and passionate, and there's a luminosity that comes through everywhere on his CD The Unknown." -- Stuart Broomer, Toronto Life Magazine

DOORS 8 PM - SHOW 9 PM

Kirk MacDonald - saxophones
Neil Swainson - bass
Brian Dickinson - piano
Barry... Romberg - drums
A great night of high-end Canadian jazz! How fortunate we are to have Kirk's quartet open our all-Canadian jazz festival. We couldn't do better than to quote Greg Sutherland's Jazz Report Profile article:
" …Toronto tenor saxophonist Kirk MacDonald has established a national identity. His throaty, full bodied sound graces numerous recordings and his performances across the country have made him a must-see attraction. Coupled with superb compositional abilities, MacDonald's complete musicianship gives him a creative edge."
Neil Swainson has been a first-call musician nationally and internationally since the 1980s. His consummate swing and technique have made him a favourite bassist for the likes of Moe Koffman and Woody Shaw. He has had a long-time productive association with George Shearing and more recently has worked with singer Roberta Gambarini.
Juno Award winning pianist Brian Dickinson is one of Canada's most versatile introspective and flexible acoustic artists and composers. Born in Guelph, Ontario, he started playing the piano when he was five. In his early teens, Brian quickly acquired a taste for blues and rock & roll. His father, an amateur jazz guitarist, got Brian interested in jazz. Dickinson began listening to the music of piano players Bill Evans, Keith Jarret, Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner.
Brian Dickinson worked with many of the top names in the field of jazz: trumpeter Randy Brecker, saxophonist Dewey Redman, guitarists John Abercrombe and Sonny Greenwich. Under his own name, Brian has recorded two albums 'October 13th' and 'In Transition'. In addition, Brian's piano work can be heard on saxophonist Mike Murley's 'Time and Tide', bassist Keiran Over's 'Gateway' and 'Shapeshift', and Jane Bunnet's 'In Dew Time'.
In addition to composing, performing and recording, Brian Dickinson is on the music faculties at the University of Toronto and at Toronto's Humber College.
After 40 years at the drums, Barry Romberg has established himself as one of Canada's most unique percussion stylists. He has been nominated for Drummer of the Year in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009 by the National Jazz Awards. It comes as no surprise that he was asked to join this remarkable quartet.
"He just might be the best tenor player I have ever heard"

Ravish Momin - drums, percussion, tabla
Skye Steel - violin
Greg Heffernan - cello, electronics
Tanya Kalmanovitch - ...viola, violin
Tarana is the brain-child of percussionist Ravish Momin, who cut his jazz teeth performing/recording with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM).
AACM was founded in the 1960s by tenor-saxophonist legend Kalaparush Maurice McIntrye. The AACM initial membership included Roscoe Mitchell, Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, Leroy Jenkins, Lester Bowie and other influential performers who clung to the adage "Ancient to the Future" and still continue to explore the boundaries of jazz.
Inspired by their music, Ravish has kept on developing Trio Tarana, continuing to search across various world music genres. Lately, he has managed to re-invent the band with a brand-new line up, as well as introducing the element of electronics to create lush ambient soundscapes and other-worldly textures.
For his return to the Yardbird Suite, he has also invited a special guest, native Albertan and virtuoso violist, Tanya Kalmanovitch, to create a unique chamber-jazz ensemble that will explore classical forms, Indian raga drones, Middle-eastern modes, layered rhythms and no-holds barred improvisation!
