Buyers who already own a home are also now eligible for a tax credit and the purchase of a home. The $6,500 maximum credit will be available to existing homeowners who have lived in their current residence for five of the prior eight years. The legislation does set forth several provision including, limiting eligibilit...y for existing homeowners to homes worth $800,000 or less, as well as making both credits available only for primary residences, not second homes or investment properties. The legislation will take effect November 7, 2009 and is not retroactive.Read More

Lynn Albert Smith Thank God for this extension and revision. I'm not big on Government give away programs but this is one that makes sense. I think extending the option to qualified existing home home owners is the first Gov. project that has made any sense since last Nov. I'm excited for the opportunity that this will afford so many people.

Sellers looking to sell and buy another home can also can get a $6500 tax credit as long as you lived in your primary residence for the 5 years of the last 8 years.
