Alumnae Association of Mount Holyoke College Second of THREE Burning Questions: How do you stimulate a reciprocal relationship, when you seem to be doing all the listening?

November 6 at 12:22pm
Karen
Karen
Start talking.

In all seriousness, I try to use my listening skills to identify common ground or common concerns, then ask if the other person wants to think through it together. I ask questions, and explain why the question is important from my perspective. Good listening requires thoughtful engagement. It's not a passive or selfless activity. ... Read MoreExcept on Facebook and Twitter, we don't ask the abyss questions. We ask people, individuals. Individual people need to respond to questions as unique individuals. That will lead to reciprocity.

So, um. Why do you ask?

Alumnae Association of Mount Holyoke College First of THREE Burning Questions: Do women confront ethical questions and dilemmas that men may not have to face? Is the reverse also true?

Sue
Sue
Yes they do. I think abortion is probably the most obvious. Men may want to weigh in on this issue but they are not the ones who carry the trauma/depression/guilt of an abortion for years. Yet, what's the alternative? An unwanted child destined for abuse?

Transmission of STD's is another huge moral dilemma which few people talk about. This includes Hepatitis C which is of almost epidemic proportions among some populations. People can contract Hep C, which is a terrible illness, by the use of one dirty needle or sexual contact with one infected partner.

I think men face ethical questions and dilemmas also, which would include sperm bank donation, transmission of STD's, the responsibility of taking medications such as Viagra / body building supplements (some women have taken testosterone too, as we know from the Olympics). Body supplements have the side effect of "roid rage" (steroid use) and terribly violent acts have resulted from their use. ... Read More

I guess I'm concentrating on the medically ethical dilemmas because I'm a doctor. If I were an economist or sociologist I would also be including the proverbial "glass ceiling" re: equal pay for equal work (see Maria Shriver's new study), as well as behavioral norms for raising children.
