Thank you to everyone for your comments on this difficult topic. It so important that every perspective be heard and considered. We all have our own reasons for supporting or opposing the death penalty. We hope that everyone will come to the event in January to learn more about how the death penalty is actually used in Washington and the costs... See More - financial and otherwise - of maintaining this option. We need to have an open and honest discussion that considers all viewpoints. We have started it here, now let's continue it on January 9th!

Protecting civil liberties is at the heart of protecting both individual liberties and protecting the many from harm. If one innocent person gets put to death, that is a gross violation of his or her civil liberties and a threat to all of the rest of us. At the same time, if someone commits a crime at the level that currently invokes the death penalty, those people need to stay in prison permanently.
