The community of Mthifu in central Malawi has seen some big changes in the past year. An early childhood development centre has been constructed by Gorta in partnership with local partner organisation PRDO. Most of the one hundred and eighty children from the surrounding eight villages are now receiving an education fo...r the first time.
Development is ongoing here in Mthifu. Founder of partner organisation PRDO, Robert Egolet has become a familiar face in this community as he oversees the planned implementation of the next stage of development in Mthifu – a large aforestation project.
Deforestation for charcoal burning, slash and burn cultivation, and tobacco curing has been causing serious soil erosion and environmental degradation in recent years.
However Robert met with some community leaders who are leading the charge to reverse this worrying trend. Read More

A Guinness World Record was shattered this weekend when 173,045,325 citizens gathered at over 3,000 events in more than 120 countries, demanding that their governments eradicate extreme poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!, now in its fourth year, has been... certified by Guinness World Records as the largest mobilization of human beings in recorded history, an increase of about 57 million people over last year.
All participants at Gorta's World Food Day Conference 2009, almost two hundred people, took part in the mobilization by reading aloud a pledge at the opening of the event.
The pledge was led by Rebecca Amukhoye, Gorta Country Representative for Uganda, Emily Banda, Project Director of Malawian partner organisation, PRDO and Karen Coleman, journalist and broadcaster. Students of two Dublin schools also attended the event to join in the pledge.
