photo by Julie Huck As a member of the bikelist.org touring newsgroup (formerly phred.org) I come across not only suggestions for great places to do a bike tour, but also some interesting ideas about ways to make bike travel more fulfilling. One such idea relates to maps...

great idea, when I went to Europe no one had ever heard of Oregon!

Even crossing the US it didn't hurt to have a US map along. We could show people where we were from, where we started biking, and where we were headed. But for us, the map was of almost no use at all, not enough detail. Had to get each states map for that. Iowa? is that the Buckeye state where they grow potatoes?

Using GoogleEarth, take some screenshots and save them as jpegs, put them in your iPhoto application and upload them onto your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPod Classic. Then you can show them as part of your personal slide show to your fellow travelers. If you're in a WiFi-covered area (,as in a local library) you can use the GoogleEarth App to show even more (or less) details of where you're from and how that relates to the rest of the world.

Check out this short teaser for an upcoming documentary from Mike Dion about the Tour Divide. It's a work-in-progress, but promises to capture the sublime struggle of the world's longest mountain bike race. BTW, Matthew Lee finished the 2009 Tour Divide yesterday morning in first place...

David Ziccardi

David Ziccardi On Saturday I got back from doing the loop from Whitefish into B.C., AB and Glacier. GTS wasn't yet open so we had to go "around the horn"--Looking Glass and Marias--so we could ride the west side of GTS up and back. Made it to the Big Bend at 10 and a ranger said the rest of the road would open in 30 min. My girlfriend and I became the first bikes to make it to Logan Pass legally this year. (A tour group appears to have crossed illegally the previous weekend.) This was her first loaded tour and she loved it. If you are thinking about doing this route be prepared for some dastardly winds in Canada.

Yeah, so just like anyone else, we like to brag about how incredible our state is! For those of you who aren't aware, Adventure Cycling Association World Headquarters is located in the northwest of majestic, mountainous, Montana...

Adventure Cycling tours specialist Sarah Raz hit the lettuce on the head in her ON THE ROAD posting of June 23, when she wrote: “The best part of any cycling trip is, without a doubt, the ever-present food element.” But Tom Kevill-Davies of London, England, takes the food and cycling thing...

We have had a few questions from folks about how they can find other riders from their original Bikecentennial '76 groups. We have a few different venues for you to try and reconnect. First, you can check out our Rider Registry. Here people have added their various trips from the past...

A GPS track can be defined on a Google Map.
Adventure Cycling Association
I've found that MapMyRide is a good resource, especially when users have used the Note feature. I'd love to see some of your examples. .JHM.
Alia

Alia Hi ACA, I think I read somewhere that Michael McCoy's 'Cycling the Great Divide' (2000) was being updated for 2010. Is that true? Cheers, Alia

Adventure Cycling Association
Alia, my book was updated last year. If you purchase a copy, be sure it says "fourth printing 2008" up front. I don't believe it's scheduled for another update in 2010. Also be aware that the book does not cover the Canadian extension of the route. We hope to add that in the next revision. Have fun! -- MM

Rachael Pasternak

Rachael Pasternak My boyfriend and I are planning a 14 day tour through The Netherlands and would rather rent bikes in Amsterdam then bring our own. Any advice on where to rent a decent touring bike?

Adventure Cycling Association
Hi Rachael, I did a search for Netherlands on our online Cyclists' Yellow Pages and came up with 33 listings, so I'd start there, http://cyp.adventurecycling.org:8080/4dcgi/index.a4d?action=cyp.online Also, you might try posting your query to our Forums. It's accessible from the column on the left. .JHM.
William S Roulston

William S Roulston My son and I did the Northern Tier in 2004. The film we shot just aired on Travel Channel. So thankful to the original Bikecentennial for inspiring the dream and the current AC for supplying the knowhow to make it happen. http://www.facebook.com/pages/DreamRiders/52421432959

Thanks! We've been spreading the word. Great trailer!
Brian Holt

Brian Holt I am planning on riding the International Selkirk Loop in late July. Does anyone have any good information or insight on the loop, road conditions, must-see's, camping, etc?

Adventure Cycling Association
Brian, I asked John, in our Tours dept about this loop and here's what he said:

"On the loop, the Canadian towns of Nelson, New Denver, and Kaslo are particularly funky and fun. Kaslo has a great music (jazz, mostly) festival in late July/early August. In the U.S., Sandpoint, Newport, and Bonner's Ferry, are also nice places in which to hang out. Sandpoint has a good music festival in early August, too.

There are numerous campgrounds to be had around the loop. The riding is good, though the shoulders are sometimes nonexistent on the roadways. The traffic is not too bad, especially during mid-week, and Canadian drivers tend to be a little more courteous toward cyclists than those in the States.... Read More

Be sure to bring a swimsuit, as there are numerous opportunities for taking dips in the numerous lakes/reservoirs/hot springs along the route."

What’s the most important part of any bicycle trip? If you said majestic vistas, quality time with like-minded folks, or fresh air, you know you’re lying. The best part of any cycling trip is, without a doubt the ever-present food element. And there’s a reason...

Andrew Helms Has anyone ever ridden the bike route (L ) in Pennsylvania? It’s from Pennsylvania/ Delaware border to the Pennsylvania New York border? If so how long did it take you and how many miles is it?

Andrew, you might want to post this query to our Forums, too. You can access them via a link on the left side of this page. .JHM.
