Frank Korfias If you are traveling on the Northern Tier Route, the small town of Henry in Central Illinois (www.henryil.com) allows bicyclists to camp (no fire) for free in Waterworks Park, on the bank of the Illinois river. Simply call the police department (309-364-3933) to get permission.

All my life I have toured with panniers, and this marks the first time I´ve made my transition to a trailer. It´s not that I have anything against panniers, or want to jump in on the debate as to which is more efficient. ...

Don't forget to check out the B.O.B and the Xtrawheel offerings. I use the BOB for both touring and hauling; Absolutely no complaints.

For running errands and hauling, I purchased the waterproof liner and cargo net. It's much easier to pack etc., when you are making multiple stops compared to the dry bag. Also consider kickstands for both the bike and trailer-- this makes loading / unloading and parking far easier.

I used a B.O.B. along with small panniers on my trike ride from Houston to New York. It worked perfectly! I kept all of my camp & cook gear in the dry bag on the trailer, my clothes in one pannier and my netbook, atlas & office stuff in the other pannier. I also carried a trunk bag that carried my camelbak, snacks and my phone & camera. It all worked out well & I plan on using same setup for San Francisco to Virginia Beach Summer 2010.

There is a $5 reservation fee

As promised in last week's blog post, I have a tip on how to determine when mountain passes typically open and closed. In general, you won't find a better spot to begin this research than an individual state's Department of Transportation (DOT) website...

Brenda Varner My husband wants to buy a portable GPS navigator device. I don't know much about them, I'm just now starting to gather information. I do know, that I want one that will give bicycle friendly directions. Suggestions?

As far as I know, there aren't any devices that give bicycle-specific directions though the software that comes with them might have that option. My best advice would be to head over to the GPS discussion in our Forums. There is a fair amount of information already there. If you sign up for a free username you can also post your question. http://www.adventurecycling.org/forums/index.php?board=3.0 .JHM.

I have looked at the Garmin Nuviphone as an option as well as the i-phone. There are several applications for the i-phone to use the GPS functions of the phone for navigating. I like the phone/GPS option as it give me the ability to take pictures and upload them to a website during my travels. I look forward to testing this out this summer.

The GPS Motion X application for the iphone gets very good reviews! I think it will be my choice for the spring and I'll see how it works!

I was riding with a girlfriend who has AKA when her new leg that wasn't fitting perfectly fell off. We strapped it on the back and she made it home pedaling with one leg. We hadn't laughed that hard in a long time.

The rules for Adventure Cycling tours are few.1. Have a good time2. Wear a helmetI'm pretty sure you've got number one covered, but let's devote a little time here to number two...

Riders who don't wear helmets don't likely have anything to protect.

I know several people who have been hit by cars and they are very good experience cyclist. I've been run off the road by people who think cyclist have no rights. Helmets save lives and protect the quality of life. I have been cycling long distance since 1978, not once has anything gotten in my helmet by way of air vent. Things have flown down my jersey many times, and I've been stung, but not by way of helmet. :-)

Another good event is San Francisco's Super Market Street Sweep a fun bike race to for speed or cargo which donated over 7.500 lbs of food for the local food bank, lots of fun and a great way to spend a saturday. If you live in the bay area come join us next year.

Aqua

Aqua Do you guys have, or plan to have, an iPhone application? It would be awesome if a user could download map sets to whichever route they're traveling, right to their phone for either back up or extra help finding their way. Also having an app with updated CYBs would be the best help ever! I just ask because I'm planning... on taking a cross-country trip within the next few years and having as many resources as I can get is my plan. Thank you for all your help and best wishes to you and yours.

Hi Aqua, At this point we don't have an iPhone or similar app and no definite plans for one but it's an interesting idea. We have recently created a group to look at technology issues such as this so keep the ideas coming and we'll add them to the discussion.

Can you tell me what CYBs are? I think I should know but can't figure it out this morning. .JHM.

I'm sorry, I meant the CYP, Cyclists' Yellow Pages. I do suppose though that just somehow downloading the online version of the Yellow Pages onto the phone would be easy enough. If I think of any other ideas or if I hear of any more ideas i'll let you guys know. Thank you for the response!

No worries. I just wanted to make sure I was current on the lingo. =)

Also, you can access much of the CYP content online, too. Check out the search page: http://cyp.adventurecycling.org:8080/4dcgi/index.a4d?action=cyp.us .JHM.

Kent Grimes

Kent Grimes I REALLY enjoyed the articles on local touring. I live 45 miles from Portland OR and there is so much to do and see. I can go to the Coast Range or the Cascades in 20 miles. This has changed my thinking of a grand tour to maybe many more local tours.

Also look for the release of ACA's Sierra Cascades route in early April. We'll be hosting release parties near you in Portland at the REI in the Pearl (April 7) and Eugene's REI on April 8 (also Seattle flagship REI on April 6). The route will be great by itself but also will connect with some of our other routes to create some really fine loops. You can see more on this map: http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/RouteNetwork.pdf, which now has the Sierra Cascades route on it.
