Thanks for posting, this is my biggest fear for my big doggy! Marley has an elevated dog bowl because I was told a few years ago that this prevents bloat, guess we need some new bowls!

they only mention surgery to prevent... i know i have also heard to keep dogs calm after eating. don't let them run around too much and jump up and down off furniture.

I ABSOLUTELY concur with Deb Dempsey, the author of this article. I worked in the pet products distribution arena for about six years, and have continued for the past number of years as a trainer/behaviorist and caregiver, as well as this year doing a veterinary tech/assistant internship to further learn what I can about dogs in particular.
From inside the industry I learned to read the labels and found that there are some GRAPHIC examples of disgustingly insufficient foods because of what are deemed 'acceptable' ingredients.
I urge all of my clients to read the labels, know the terms utilized and KNOW what you are feeding your dog as clearly as you do your own foods.
This article will certainly open your eyes and give you much needed insight into what you need to know to make educated choices. Please take the time to read and learn.

I think it is criminal that they arent' really required to list their ingredients so many people are unwittingly killing their pets and thinking they are doing the right thing. Even Vets prescribe some of this food. If Gerber pulled something like this everyone would be up in arms. Our pets are our babies so....

FYI: As both a dairy replacement heifer farm and a cow/calf operation, farmers can no longer send dead cows to companies that render the cows into pet food. And certainly no dead, diseased, down or disabled cow should ever go into any food chain, whether pet or human. As of March of this year, the USDA put restrctions in place which says companies... See More can no longer pick up DEAD cattle. They can continue to pick up dead pigs, sheep, goats, horses (you forgot about them) but NOT cattle. Farmers around the country must now compost their dead livestock. I firmly believe that our feeder lots and livestock auction houses need to be revamped, overhauled. It breaks my heart when I see video's and pictures of the inhumane, cruel treatment some cattle receive at these places. Dr. Temple Grandin has worked tirelessly for years making changes, but we still have a long way to go. On this farm, we treat all of our livestock humanely and know there are many other farmers like us who are not "organic" but who believe in treating livestock with the best of care. It is our investment, our livelihood. My husband (a fifth generation full time farmer here) does not use hormones or antibiotics in our cattle feed. And we as a farm family would not sell an animal for consumption that we would not want to eat ourselves. I think an educated consumer, whether it is about human or pet food, can make the wisest decisions. Buy direct from a farm or ranch like ours and make your own pet food once a week. Buy a side or quarter of beef from a farmer/rancher you can trust. You have more control over your and your pets food!
