Animal Place Elsa is doing much better today, spending all day with Nicholas and the rest of the Jersey crew. I hiked up a ginormous hill (if I do say so myself) to find Elsa lying down, quietly chewing her cud, along with Nicholas, Summer and Freedom.

We couldn't take in this precious rooster but when we contacted Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary, they said yes! Donald was born with a leg disability that Harvest Home thinks can be fixed with surgery. We'd love to see Donald walk again - he's been through so much! If you'd like to donate toward Donald's surgery, please do so: http://www.harvesthomeanimal.org/blog/?p =115

Recently, we welcomed Donald the Disabled Rooster to our flock. Donald was a product of a first grade school project in Napa, Calif. As he hatched from the shell, his legs were clearly deformed.

Plants may not have pain receptors, like mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians but some may be altruistic, recognizing kin: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2 009-11/ajob-cap111009.php

Although plants have the ability to sense and respond to other plants, their ability to recognize kin and act altruistically has been the subject of few studies. The authors explored kin recognition in Impatiens pallida (yellow jewelweed). ...

Animal Place took 6 goats (one was pregnant, giving birth to twins) and 2 sheep (one who was pregnant as well) last year from a Watsonville slaughterhouse. The facility is still in business and a few days ago, the owner pled no contest, receiving a paltry $1,000 in fines. That's it. No probation. Nada. Very disappointed: http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news /ci_13763671?source=email&nclick_check=1

Animal Place We let Elsa out today because she cried all night. Elsa is a pushy, rude cow!! She couldn't be polite to any of the other cattle, even the littlest ones. She's settled down a bit but is currently engaged in a heated shoving match with Nicholas. This must be really stressful for her and hopefully she'll calm down soon.

Elsa is home! She's really stressed out right now, but at least 3/5 of the cattle came over to say hi. You can see some pictures here: http://animalplacesanctuary.blogspot.com /2009/11/meet-elsa-newest-bovine-residen t.html

Several months ago, we received a call from a local school that planned on sending their 15-yr-old Jersey cow to slaughter. The cow had been used as a teaching tool for her entire life, giving birth to nine calves and spending her life at this one farm. ...

Animal Place is now eagerly awaiting the arrival of Elsa, a 15-yr-old dairy cow who was to be sent to slaughter because the small school didn't want to keep on a cow who didn't produce babies or milk anymore. Pictures when she arrives!
