Green Gifts by BC Hydro

When you send a friend a Green Gift, you're sending more than a pretty picture. You're spreading the word that we each have a role to play in conservation &ndash and you're encouraging your friends to step up and play their part.

Every Green Gift comes with a Green Gift picture and your personalized message. And it also comes with a Power Smart tip: a simple, practical way you can conserve energy and shrink your environmental footprint.

Our tips contest is over - and thanks to everyone for your great ideas!

We're pleased to announce the winning idea was Staci MacIntyre-Halyk's, who offers this energy-saving tip:

Plan your meals ahead of time, so you can thaw any meat you'll be using in the fridge overnight instead of in the microwave the same day (or using water in the sink). Your fridge won't have to work as hard while the meat thaws, you won't have to use energy for the microwave or
hot water, and... once you start planning ahead, you can implement a meat-free meal once a week, or plan your recipes using as many local ingredients as possible – to further help the environment!

And runner-up Jenn Dick suggests:

Use dimmer switches. They not only save energy, they can change the ambience in the room. :)

Congratulations, and keep your eyes peeled for our next contest!

Thanks for the feedback, Shirley. We've tried to reach a compromise between avoiding messaging huge numbers of friends at once (which could be irritating if they don't want to receive those messages) and keeping the application easy to use. So we're using Facebook's built-in function that lets you type in the first few letters of a friend's name, and then gives you a list of friends whose names start with those letters, so you can just click and choose them. But we're always open to ideas, and we'll keep your comments in mind for future development.

About contests: we don't mean to disappoint people from outside British Columbia, and we're delighted so many people from around the world love Green Gifts! Our first responsibility, though, is to the people of B.C. They own BC Hydro, and encouraging them to spread the word about conservation is the goal of our contests - which is why only B.C. residents can win prizes.

Thanks again for taking the time to leave your comments!

a bit time consuming when you have to try and remeber friends names to type in, can you not try and do like other app and list comes up automatic. would be easier to use and more encouraging to use also.
why do you have to be bc resident only to win green prizes

Hi, Elaine -

We're having some difficulty messaging you on Facebook. Would you mind responding to me either by message or on the Wall to let me know if you're still experiencing this issue?
