Six Degrees

This application is intended to test the 6 degrees of separation idea through the connections of Facebook users.

What does it do?

You can use the application to search for other users on Facebook and show how you're connected to them through friends

Also:

See a "random connection" every time you visit the app. Who knows who you might be connected to?

Manage your friend network. Remove a connection to a friend and see what other ways you can connect to them

the Browse Network functionality lets you click through the friend network, and then you can see what other ways you're connected to whoever you end up at

What reasons are there not to join?

None.

Great application but still some 'hick-ups'

I think this is a really great application and the new version is a great improvement on the last version. The speed to find matches is now much quicker than it was before although from time to time a match is not found and the reason isn't always clear. Do you intend to incorporate the FOAF format/framework in your work?

it barely works, once in a laaarge while... it's a great idea but the app is frustrating. I wish someone could improve it.

What an amazing concept when you really think about the power of this..... I mean - Imagine applying the 6 degrees of separation to you home based business.... What do you think the results would be?

good idea, it's just a shame it doesn't seem to work and spends 20 minutes trying to calculate only to then tell me the server is busy. Doesn't work at all.

Problems with text encoding

The app doesn't understand letters with diacritics (ć, for example, contained in most surnames around here) so I can find practically noone in my region. A shame because otherwise it would be a really nice and useful app.

Hi all,

I've just put a new version of Six Degrees up which is much better suited to Facebook's new profile design. If you want to move to the new profile then go to http://apps.new.facebook.com/six_degrees_app/. (Be warned: if you go to the new profile design you won't be able to change back. Everyone will be moved over in the next few weeks, though.)

There are a couple of new features too, including better searching (I hope) and if you try and do a search that takes a long time you'll receive a notification when it finishes rather than having to stay on the page and wait.

I can't get this to work - it seems to prioritise loading the banner ads than the actual results.

I like the option that lets you be selective about which of your friends the connections go through. Unfortunately it's too slow to test properly!
