The covers with just title/author over the blank state don't look good so instead we added a functionality to upload your own cover. The old ones can be still found on some profiles since Facebook caches them forever.

When you search for book and it's not there, the call to add your own is at the bottom of the search screen. Or you can access it directly via http://apps.facebook.com/facebookshelf/entities/new

The mini-feed events are only sent to your friends to keep them informed about books you've read, reviews you wrote and so on. This way they can discover new books for them to read. If you don't like that functionality, you can disable it for any Facebook application via http://www.facebook.com/editapps.php
