Economic opportunity and security in today's world should follow the Hassidic model of the old fable of being lost in the forest- We don't know which way to go but if we pool not just some (not only the pure empirical and behavioral) but all threads, we know which way NOT to go.

That's one of the appealing aspects of pond scum--it can be grown in waste water or salt water (or fresh water, for that matter) and cleans the medium it's grown in before it's harvested.

How about going to the shelves and seeing what industry uses the most of, what the by-products are and talking with some chemical engineers to see what can be done with the ultimate waste materials by adding something. I'm not talking about harmless bio-degradeables here, but the more toxic stuff that exhibits volatility. Getting energy from it while neutralizing seems like a good idea and so I suppose people work on it daily, but it never hurts to ask.
