Art League Houston

Art League Houston Art League Houston is pleased to announce the opening of Wishing Well for Houston, a collaborative project by Heath Hayner, Aram Nagle, and Brian Piana, January 15 through February 26, 2010 in the Main Gallery of Art League Houston. Originally conceived by the artists while enrolled in a Collaboration in the Arts clas...s at the University of Houston, this much expanded and realized version of Wishing Well for Houston depicts the disparities in average median per-capita income among Houston's super neighborhoods through a major interactive sculptural installation.

The opening reception for Wishing Well for Houston is Friday January 15, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. with an artist talk at 6:45.

The City of Houston is known for its diversity. An underplayed aspect of this diversity is in the uneven distribution of wealth, which in its disparity, can be seen as one drives around the city. At times, these geographical shifts in income are subtle and hard to perceive; while in other instances the differences are severe, as in the case when low income neighborhoods abut million dollars high rises.

One way that the City of Houston classifies the different geographic regions of the city is through the designation of Super Neighborhood. A Super Neighborhood is, as defined by the City of Houston website:

"... a geographically designated area where residents, civic organizations, institutions and businesses work together to identify, plan, and set priorities to address the needs and concerns of their community. The boundaries of each super neighborhood rely on major physical feature (bayous, freeways, etc.) to group together contiguous communities that share common physical characteristics, identity, or infrastructure."

Wishing Well for Houston is a three-dimensional map of Houston that was created by analyzing per-capita numbers associated with the city's established Super Neighborhoods.

In constructing Wishing Well for Houston, the artists have reduced the intricate and irregular contours of Houston's approximately 80 super neighborhoods, along with other municipalities in Harris County, to simplified angular shapes. These shapes in turn have been extruded into vertical columns, with the major freeway arteries of the city defined as canyon-like voids that act as reference line for the viewer.

Within this framework, the height of each column has been determined by the average median per-capita income value of the specific super neighborhood, as described by the 2000 U.S. Census. Each column houses a steel chime, whose tone itself more or less corresponds to the wealth of the neighborhood. (For example, the more advantaged a neighborhood, the taller the tower and the lower the pitch of the chime; the more disadvantaged, the shorter the tower and the higher the pitch.)

Chimes are activated when the viewer tosses coins into the installation itself or into a chime's respective tower. At the end of the exhibit, the resulting loose change will be collected and donated to Avenue Community Development Corporation. Avenue CDC is a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing Houston's Washington Avenue and Near Northside Community by developing affordable housing and economic opportunities, while preserving our area's economic, cultural, and historical diversity.

Art League Houston Art League Houston is pleased to announce the opening of Natural Recyclers, which features an earth media installation by Divya Murthy and Nicola Parente, created for the Art League patio, and its accompanying installation. Wasted Resolve, which takes place in the ALH project gallery, November 13 through December 31, 2...009. Natural Recyclers, is a long-term project, and the first installation to take place in the Art League Patio since it opened to the public in 2008.

The opening reception for Natural Recyclers and Wasted Resolve is Friday, November 13, 2009, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m., with an artist talk at 6:45 p.m.

Natural Recyclers opens in conjunction with Obsession of the Essential, which features the mixed media works of Brent Kollock, in Art League Houston's Main Gallery.

Using mainly recyclable and renewable resources, Parente and Murthy have created a site specific installation for the Art League Patio, consisting of three giant mushrooms, whose bases are fabricated from rebar, soil and moss. The mushroom caps and stems are planted with Texas native and non-native, edible and herb plants. The use of the mushroom reflects the important role the fungi play in the ecosystem through its use of decomposing materials as its source of nourishment. Parente and Murthy feel the mushroom and its symbiotic relationship with the root structures of plants is the ideal symbolic gesture to promote environmental consciousness within our community.

Wasted Resolve, an installation created by Parente and Murthy for the Front Gallery, is inspired by a 2008 New York Times article that ranked Houston as the worst recycler among the nation's 30 largest cities. Wasted Resolve is a visual categorized summary of un-recycled waste created from debris collected during a week long period from an eight-block area surrounding Art League Houston. The intent of Wasted Resolved is to make the viewer more aware of our city's waste consumption and to create a dialogue with the audience that focuses attention on the importance of reducing waste.

About the Artists
In 2000, Divya Murthy graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.F.A. in Photography and Digital Media from the University of Houston, with a Minor in Art History. In 2006 she received an M.F.A. in Studio Art from the School of The Museum of Fine Arts, Tufts University in Boston. Her photographs, videos, and installations have been exhibited throughout the United States at venues that include the Galveston Arts Center, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Baltimore Contemporary Museum, and the Blaffer Museum at the University of Houston. Her awards include a 2006 Yousuf Karsh Prize in Photography, First Place from the School of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, a Carol Crow Memorial Fellowship from the Houston Center for Photography, and a 2005 AIGA World Studio Foundation Grant.

Born in Mola di Bari, Italy in 1966, Nicola Parente currently lives and works in Houston. He has a B.A. from Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and an M.B.A. from the University of St. Thomas in Houston. Earlier this year, Parente's work was exhibited in Transparent/Translucent, curated by Wade Wilson at the Museum Gallery, University of Texas, San Antonio. In 2008 he collaborated with the Dominic Walsh Dance Theater in designing and creating the set for the world premier production of Terminus, a dance inspired by Parente's paintings. The artist's work is represented by Gremillion & Co., Fine Art, and can be found in public and private collections in the United States, Spain, Italy, Germany, and Ethiopia.

Art League Houston Art League Houston is pleased to announce the opening of Obsession of the Essential, featuring the work of Brent Kollock, November 13 through December 31, 2009 in the Main Gallery of Art League Houston. This is Kollock's first solo show at the Art League. His mixed media work combines the raw aesthetic of Jean Dubuff...et with the obsessive spirit of Hieronymus Bosch.

The opening reception for Obsession of the Essential is Friday, November 13, 2009, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m., with an artist talk at 6:30 p.m.

Obsession of the Essential opens in conjunction with Natural Recyclers and Wasted Resolve, two installations by Divya Murthy and Nicola Parente, featured on the Art League Patio and in the Front Gallery space.

The title of the exhibition, Obsession of the Essential refers to Kollock's focus on the essential aspects of life. He believes it is all too easy to get sucked into the void through our modern fascination with celebrities, reality television, and politics - subjects which have very little to do with our actual place in the world, and which in truth distract us from achieving actual happiness and growth. Through obsession with the trivial, we have lost the ability to be amazed by our lives. Kollock says, "I focus on the essential and through my work hope to show a fascinating and endlessly, captivating world, which we should enjoy to the nth degree, every minute of every day."

About the Artist
Brent Kollock is a Dallas-based artist who was born in Houston, Texas in 1966. In 1992 he received his B.F.A. from the Meadows School of Art at Southern Methodist University. Since graduating, his drawings and paintings have been featured in numerous solo and group shows at venues that include DW Gallery and The McKinney Avenue Contemporary in Dallas, Arte Contemporane in Paris, and Redbud Gallery in Houston.

Become acquainted with one of the most painterly methods among the printmaking techniques. Monoprints and monotypes are essentially printed paintings. Although images can be similar, editioning is not possible--no two images can be exactly the same. The Monotype process creates a translucency and a quality of light very different from a painting on paper or a print. There is beauty in its spontaneity and combination of printmaking, painting and drawing.

Although a serious writer who eloquently addresses issues such as coastal preservation and sustainable development, Jim Blackburn had not considered his poetry to be ...anything other than a form of entertainment he wrote or made up on the cuff for himself and his friends. This all changed in the fall of 2008. "The idea to collaborate came when I walked into [Isabelle's] studio, saw the birds on the wall and literally said, "I can write poems to go with these birds." The poems Blackburn created, in response to his friend's work, allowed him to more fully express his spiritual devotion to nature or what he refers to as "Earth Church," in ways he had only touched upon in his prose.

Isabelle Scurry Chapman says of Birds: A Collection of Verse and Vision,"For me, the book is about an amazing collaboration with a wonderful friend, two birds of a feather responding to the magic of birds."
