Nicholas is 8 months old and as of last week is exclusively formula fed. He drinks about 500ml of formula a day which the paediatrician says is fine. I also mix his porridge with formula so in all he gets about 650ml a day. He eats solids three times a day - porridge in the morning, fruit/veg and yoghurt for lunch and ...porridge
and yoghurt for dinner. He still wakes up at least twice during the
night for a bottle. Some nights it's up to 4 times but then he'll only
drink half the bottle at a time. Does he really need these night feedings or is this just habit? Should we try sleep training to get him to sleep more than 4 hours at a time?

Hi Christl
You need to add more variety and protein into his diet. See Ann Richarsons article on Healthy Eating for Healthy Sleep:
http://www.babysense.co.za/peaceful-nights/articles-of-interest/feeding-sense-for-healthy-sleep
and also look in Baby Sense (Chapeter 15) for a good meal plan and ideas on what to give for Lunch and Dinner. Change that first before considering sleep coaching.

Helena Reid

Helena Reid My LB is turning 9m in 2w. I read in BS that from 9m I must mash his food (except meat)with a fork. Do I still put the meat and chicken in a food processor? Do I still mix all the food (veg, starch, meat) together?

Hi Helena
Yes you can mash most of his food with fork now, but you may still need to put meats in the food processor depending on how soft it is. You can seperate the foods now so that he starts to know which tastes are which.

The hardest part for me being a mom of 2 with a 2 and half year gap is the guilt I feel. I knew having 2 was going to be tough, but I have these guilty feelings all the time. I felt very guilty at the end of my pregnancy that I couldn't sit on the floor and play with my daughter like I used to. Having had a c-section I could do even less after. ... Read MoreThen this little boy takes over and needs to be fed every few hours, I am exhausted and my daughter is still saying Mommy play with me. Since I have gone back to work I feel very torn when I get home because they both need me for different reasons and I still have supper to do, bottles, bath time etc. So I feel very overwhelmed at times. All in all-motherhood is a tough job (but still the best ever)

Hi Donna
Yes it is a good idea to introduce an iron supplement at this stage. Floradix is great. See pg 125 in Baby sense for more details on including supplements.

Jack is 5 months and 1 week, he has cereal morning and evening and veg at lunch. He has 4 breast feeds during the day. Used to sleep beautifully, now he wakes up between 10 and 11 pm, tried the water bottle, not interested, he is definately hungry at that time. He then usually sleeps untill 6.30 am. Last night he woke ...up hungry again at 3 am. What can I do? This is very frustrating, especially since the book says he should be sleeping untill 3-4 am.Read More

Hi Gushelah
I think you should either increase his meal sizes slightly or feed him at that time. You will soon be introducing protein (6months) inot his diet and you may find things start to settle again once that happens.

Hi. I am in desperate need of help! My little boy is 5 and half months. He was a dream when it came to sleeping (8-5) until he got Bronchiolitis about 7 weeks ago. He was waking about 15 times a night then. Now that he is better, he is sleeping so badly. Goes down before 7 and wakes at 12 for a bottle, which he never u...sed to do. He will not settle without it. Then wakes virtually every hour after that until I feed him again at 5 after which he doesnt sleep again. He is on 3 solid meals a day and is in a good sleeping routine during the day. I need any advice I can get, I am at my wits end. Willing to try anything! Please help!Read More

Hi. My 6mth old is on 3 solids a day but is not giving any protein (dairy) on the advice of my pead since he suffers bad excema. Last nite he woke up at 11:45 and I manage to settle him with out a big fuss. He woke up again at 1:45 so we gave him milk 150ml . He again woke up at 4:25 and he didnt want to settle with ...his dummy/water. I gave him watered down milk which he drank and only settled then (5:15) Yet he still woke at 6 which I manage to get him to drink at 6:30ish. The nite before he woke for the first time at 4am to have a bottle. What made last nite so much different from the nite before? Should I give him milk if he wake up before 4am? I also use get up at 12pm for a bottle then he suddenly droped that one and started waking up at 2am. And the nite before was the first time he woke 4am. What am I doing wrong?Read More
