Fred Weiss Where is Bastiat's wisdom when it is needed most? The French seem to have forgotten - or long ago chosen to ignore it.

I was wondering about this when I was reading about him the other day: what was it like for him in France, back then? Were there many similarly clever thinkers throughout the land? Was he a lone voice in the wilderness, just like now? His cleverly sarcastic tone makes me guess the latter.

Rainer Erkens

Rainer Erkens But nothing is as brilliant in Bastiat`s work than his description of thoses who want the state to prohibt the sun from shining in order to protect their business as candle producers. Greetings from Brazil. We need more Bastiannism here!

Cathy Basceanu Great political economist; his 'broken window fallacy' is always a source of inspiration when talking about human nature and hidden costs

After reading Henry Hazlett's "Economics in One Lesson" and seeing how he applied Bastiat's "broken window fallacy" in every argument addressed, I have to agree that it is truly inspiring.

Being able to consider the secondary long term effects of decisions made is never the easier thing to do, but it is essential.

Ted

Ted I just read La Loi and chuckled every time he used the word "organisateurs (organizers)" to describe people who think they're better than mere citizens and who want to shape the lives of others through government intervention, even though they can't even fix their own personal shortcomings. Written in 1850 even!
