Beauty & Wellness In continuation to our previous article on ageing well, here are some tips and tricks on what you can do to take years off your appearance.

Everyone wants to look younger than they really are, unless they are in their teens! In continuation to our previous article on ageing well, here are some tips and tricks on what yo...u can do to take years off your appearance.

Haircut

Blunt cuts make you look younger and perkier, but go in for a blunt cut only if you do not have frizzy hair, or your hair will look messy. However, if you are in control of your frizzes, go for it! Blunt cuts look best if you have straight hair.

Smooth, well maintained hair makes you look younger than messy, rough or dull hair. Make sure you snip off all split ends and trim hair regularly, so your hair is in good condition.

Hair Colour

Needless to say, conceal all strands of grey. Even if your face is smooth, wrinkle free and ageless, those grey strands are an immediate giveaway.

At times, blonde highlights in your hair make you look older than you really air, especially if you let the highlights dry out your hair, or if you go too light. Burnished, red highlights can make your hair look healthier and shinier than blonde highlights. You can go brown or a few shades lighter than your original hair.

If you are fair complexioned, you could try colouring your hair jet black. The contrast between black hair and light skin can look rather striking, and black hair makes you look younger than light hair.

Weight

Taking a few pounds off always makes you look younger. However, if you lose too much weight, you may start looking pulled down, drawn and tired, and consequently older. Being too thin or overweight can make you look older. You should aim to be within the right weight bracket for your height, or maybe the bracket below that. Thus, if your height is 5 foot 5 inches and you are a woman, you should weigh between 55 to 60 kg. However, even if you weigh anywhere between 50 to 54 kg, that should be fine. Dont go any lower than that.

Toning Up

It doesn't matter if you are thin, if you are not toned. Even if you are skinny but have loose thighs, upper arm flab, your body will start showing your age.
Tone your arms
tighten your tummy
and trim your thighs

Exercise

Exercise regularly. This gives you a healthy glow. In addition, if your face has a tendency to bloat, or if you are prone to puffiness below the eyes, regular exercise should help reduce that, making your face look fresher than ever! Combine regular exercise with frequent intake of water. Drink at least ten to twelve glasses of water everyday to flush out the toxins. Swimming is great exercise, and in addition to giving you a cardiovascular workout, it tones almost every part of your body. If you swim, you really don't need any other exercise.

Compact Powder

Avoid caking on compact powder. Often, women apply far too much compact powder with the result that their faces look pasty. Compact powder dries the face, causing fine lines to stand out more. Even if you have no lines, if you apply too much powder, it may appear as if you do. If you do apply compact powder, make sure it is not lighter than your skin colour, and that you apply moisturizer as well. Your best bet would be to apply a dusting of compact powder only on those areas that tend to shine, such as your nose, forehead and chin.

Moisturise

Moisturise daily, and don't forget your neck and hands.

Beauty & Wellness Did you know that there's a beauty parlour hiding in your kitchen?

Working women have it tough. In between rushing to work and back, juggling car pools, co-ordinating with baby sitters, cooking and house-keeping, they scarcely have time to take a deep breath. As far as visits to the beauty parlour are concerned, they ar...e at the bottom of the priority ladder! But fear not, help is at hand.

Take a look around your kitchen shelf. You'll be surprised at what you find. Did you know that tomato and lime are excellent bleaching agents? And this is just the tip of the 'ice' berg. Find out more as you read on.

1. Unboiled milk is an excellent cleanser. Dip a piece of cotton wool in a little cold milk and rub it gently on your face. You will see a lot of dirt on the cotton. Keep cleaning your face in a circular upward movement until the cotton comes out completely clean.

2. Ice-cold water is an excellent astringent and skin freshener and serves to close the pores that have opened while cleansing. It also tones the skin.

3.Cream or 'malai' is a very good moisturizer and it needs to be applied to replace the oils that are lost while cleansing and toning. It will keep your skin supple and young.

4. Equal quantities of corn flour, jowar flour (atta) and cream (malai) can give you an instant facelift. You need to make a paste and apply it on your face. Wash it off after it dries. While jowar atta will remove the dead cells, corn flour will tone up and tighten the skin and the cream will moisturize it.

5. Cabbage juice mixed with a little yeast and a tablespoon of honey is an excellent remedy for dry skin. Leave a thick paste on your face for about 15 minutes for best results.

6. Lettuce juice mixed with an equal quantity of rose water and a few drops of limejuice is an excellent remedy for oily skin. It should be applied for at least 30 minutes for best results.

Beauty & Wellness Every winter seems to be accompanied by colds, flus and a host of other diseases, especially if you live in a city exposed to climactic extremes. Here's what you can do to protect yourself from the harsh winter weather.

Showering

Come summer or winter, the morning rush doesn't stop, and every day it's the same story. Tak...e a quick shower, gulp down a quick breakfast and rush out, trying to get a head start in the rat race. Before stepping in for a hot shower though, realise that a few minutes later you're going to be out in the cold, facing the chilly wind and close to zero temperatures. And as years of experience would have taught you, facing the cold immediately after being exposed to warmth can lead to nasal disaster! Of course, if you have the stomach to have a cold watershower in the cold winter months, we salute you, and go right ahead and storm into the cold weather without a second thought. But if you're like the rest of us and need a steaming hot shower in the winter, its best if you hold the thought, and the action, until later at night. Instead, the best thing to do in the winter is toshower at night, just before getting into bed. By the time you are ready to step out, it is a good ten hours later, and your body is no longer vulnerable to exposure. Showering or bathing at night removes the need to shower in the morning, and though you may feel more equipped to face the day after a morning shower, consider substituting it with splashing your face with cold water instead. Even if you are going to be in a heated office, you would still be better off showering at night than exposingyour body to a few minutes of shock for the time you are outdoors, especially if you are prone to a cold. Similarly, make sure your kids shower at night, so they are not suddenly exposed to a cold, windy day at school immediately after a hot bath.

Cover up

Even if you don't feel cold, make sure you are well covered. 43 year old Maala Kochhar hardly felt the cold, and even in close to zero temperatures, she would just throw a shawl around herself before stepping out. Although she didn't feel the cold, her lungs did, and she was hospitalised last year with pneumonia, but didn't seem to learn her lesson, which is why she was recently hosptalised again this year with another attack of pneumonia. Understand that as you age, your body is less able to withstand the cold, and even if you have been used to exposing your body to the cold without feeling it when you were younger, there may suddenly be a time when your body breaks down and there's nothing you can do about it except pray for a speedy recovery. Depending on the degree of cold, make sure you keep your chest warm. Thermal vests are a must, because even if the heater is on when you are indoors and you remove your jacket, your chest is still protected against sudden drafts of cold. Always wear layers, so you can shed them depending on how warm you feel. Also, wear woollen socks and wear gloves. Often people in India don't wear gloves even in biting cold weather, with the result that they are walking around with freezing cold hands, and no matter how much they are wearing, they somehow never feel warm. Instead of wearing five sweaters, wear two, and wear gloves, leg warmers, woollen socks, woollen tights on your legs and a cap. Your entire body will be much better protected, and you will feel warmer.

Beauty & Wellness Following are a few homemade facials that will help make your skin beautiful and vibrant.

Citrus and grapefruit mask for oily skin type:

Ingredients:
½ grapefruit
½ lemon's juice
½ cored apple
1-2 egg whites
30-40 seedless grapes

Mix ingredients together in a blender. Apply on your face and leave for fifteen minutes, then rins...e off with warm water.

Grapefruit unclogs pores and lemon is an excellent astringent and clarifier, while egg whites tighten the skin. Expect a tingle with this mask-that means its working but if your skin is dry it could start to burn. If this occurs, wash it off immediately.

Beauty & Wellness Health is wealth. We take our health for granted, until it's gone. Here are 5 great tips that will make a world of difference to your health.

Eat at fixed hours

Eat at fixed hours everyday. If you follow this advice religiously, you will be far healthier than your peers. Don't wait till you have reached the age when yo...u can no longer say 'you are only old in the mind'. Start eating your meals at a fixed hour everyday. Only when a person becomes a grandmother, does he or she start realizing the importance of eating meals at a fixed time. Begin now, so the next to next generation can say of you: "Hell, no! That ain't my mother, that's my great grandmother!"

Avoid eating between meals

Your digestive system doesn't get a break if you keep munching throughout the day, so give it a rest. Breakfast at 8:30 am, lunch at 12:30 pm and dine at 7:30 or 8:00 pm at the latest, and do not eat anything in the middle. If you must, take a milk and snack break once in the evening, but no more. However, if you are looking to lose weight, dine even earlier and skip your evening snack entirely.

Reduce meat consumption

Avoid eating red meat and too much of chicken. Fish is fine, as it is very high protein. Other meats are not as easy to digest. Ever notice how doctors advise certain patients to stop consuming non-vegetarian food? Ever notice how many people, as they advance in age, choose to give up meat? That's because these people's systems can no longer take so much meat. The human body was not built to consume flesh, which is why humans ultimately have to switch to shakahari food. A cow will starve to death in a grassless land, but will not eat meat, and a lion will die of hunger, but will not feed on grass. Why? Nature has made the lion a meat-eater. He has well-developed canines, and a 'short' long intestine to quickly expel meat before it develops toxins. Humans on the other hand have extremely poorly developed canines, appropriate for chewing vegetables, not for tearing flesh. In addition, they have 'long' long intestines, rendering it impossible (unless you have a bad stomach) to expel the meat before it goes bad in the body and starts spreading toxins.

Increase soyabean consumption

Most of us know that soyabeans are excellent providers of nutrients, but how many of us eat this rich food? An easy way to include soyabeans in our diet is to add 500 gm of soyabean in 10 kg of wheat before it is milled. Eat these soya/wheat chapattis instead of regular wheat chapattis for a healthy, nutritious option.

Enjoy your meal

* Don't rush through your meals.
* Chew your food properly, so your system finds it easier to digest.
* Have a lively conversation during meals.
* Turn mealtimes into family time. Try and ensure that everyone eats at least one meal in a day together. Don't give your children meals in their room unless they have friends over. Make sure they sit with the rest of the family. If this is a rule from the beginning, they will find abide by it with more ease as they grow up.
* Remove the television from the dining room, or let it play music. You should not be watching the tube while eating, you should be talking to each other, remember?
* Believe it or not, enjoying a meal is actually far healthier than eating when depressed or anxious.

Beauty & Wellness It is a shame when women go out of their way to find fault with themselves. Most women are insecure with no good reason.

More often than not, a woman's physical appearance plays a major role in affecting her confidence. It is amazing when you think about all the reasons women get so insecure. Someone has a paunch, someo...ne has a few pimples, someone has a bad nose, someone has bad hair. Someone's breasts are too big, and someone's are too small. Someone is too fat, and someone is too thin.

Not all overweight women are insecure. In fact, many love their bodies just the way they are, but there are many who are insecure for this reason. Similarly, a bad complexion does not bother Latha, but Mary's pimples are causing her to lose all her self-esteem.

Stop for a moment and think about your looks. Your looks essentially are all about how you look to another person, so look at yourself through someone else's eyes. Think back to some other people you know, and figure out what would they beinsecure about. You will discover you got it all wrong. You may wonder what Sarita has to be insecure about. If you must hazard a guess, you'd say she's not too happy with her curly hair. And then you discover she hates her nose. Her nose What's wrong with that?

Others don't notice it!

Very often you will find that what upsets you the most about your looks is something that other people don't even notice. And if they do, they pay little attention to it. When conversing with Ravi, you may notice that he has a few pimples on his face, but within a few minutes of interesting conversation you forget all that and start noticing his nice smile, his great sense of humour or, if you are observant, his long eyelashes!

It is a shame when women go out of their way to find fault with themselves. True, certain severe things may cause you to be troubled, but most women areinsecure with no good reason.

Observe your behaviour at a get-together. Your eyes will be drawn towards good-looking people first. So, give your positive features importance, and enhance them with makeup. Draw attention to your beautiful eyes or lips, and no one's going to notice your large hips, your fat fingers, or whatever you areinsecure about.

No one is perfect

If you are overweight, people that are slim may catch your eye, but a slim person may not even notice who is overweight or not she may be more into observing people's noses, because she thinks she has a bad one. While you envy her her figure, she may envy you your lovely perkynose.

Remember this

No one notices much about others, unless they are very, very beautiful or very, very ugly. 90 percent of the people fall in between and spend most of their time worrying about little things that impact no one.

Something may trouble you today, and when it's mended, you will find something else to be insecure about. It's like getting a new job. When you get one, you're the happiest person, for around a month. After that you start noticing the politics, your bad boss, the bad working hours, and start dreaming about another, better job. The difference is that moving on to a better job is constructive, but feelinginsecure because of your little flaws is destructive. Often, it is these flaws that enhance your sex appeal and add to your personality and character, so tell yourself that you wouldn't change them for the world. Accept them, and love yourself.

Beauty & Wellness How many times have you looked in the mirror ruefully and complained to your mom about how she could have encouraged a healthy diet and forced you to give up junk food? I have done so many a time. In fact my one grouse against my mom has been that she did not completely get rid of my facial hair. Her defence is that I ...used to shriek my little head off whenever she came towards me with a mixture of gram flour and cream to massage my little frame and face. But thankfully she managed to get rid of most of it. Well, as for the acne and excess weight, I am trying my very best right now. But unfortunately I cannot go back in the past and wipe the slate clean. Just have to make do the best that I can. The same goes for all of you.

But there is one thing that we all can do. And that is not to repeat the same mistakes on our young ones. I am sure our parents did the best they could, as in my case I was just to strong-willed and insisted on my own way. But we must at least try to inculcate good habits from the very beginning, and give the future generation a beautiful, healthy advantage. We owe this to them.
