Since the start of the transportation trials for the Better Market Street project, the parking control officers have been working tirelessly to enforce the mandated right turns at 6th and 8th Streets. The forced turns are a test. ...

I've seen drivers try to ignore or dodge these officers. Thank them for their tenacity and a job well done!

Better Market Street The MTA is considering moving the forced right turn from 8th to 10th Street. Which would you prefer?

Muni service has sped up by about a minute on Market Street along the stretch involved in the trial program that aims to limit vehicle traffic along the busy artery to downtown. The test, which began Sept. 29, forces private vehicles traveling eastbound on Market Street to make right turn

I agree, a car-free market street from Van Ness to the Embarcadero would be ideal, but barring that, yes, move the turn back to 10th. It will be a huge improvement.

Better Market Street Today is the six-week mark of the transportation trials on Market Street. The MTA will be evaluating the trials to decide how to proceed. If you haven't given your feedback, this is the perfect time to do it! We want to hear from any and all Market Street users (pedestrians, transit users, car drivers, taxi users, bicyclists)!

As a bicyclist, the closure was great. Both directions would be even greater. As a driver, I'd be glad to give up the street-it's too busy and slow to drive on as it is and I always avoid it by going on Mission. I think we could use the extra space to make the street nicer, more attractive to pedestrians, and, as a result, more profitable for businesses.

The closure improves bike safety, but it could be a lot better. Buses could just be stopping at the center medians, leaving the right lane for taxis and bikes, The Mission bus could be diverted down Market Street to help ease traffic on Mission for private cars and what's the thinking for not diverting cars all the way down to the Embarcadero?

I think we just need more benches on Market St. This "comfort zone" is a good idea, but usually when I'm tired from walking or am waiting for a friend, I just look for a bench, and in San Francisco I rarely find one. I think using the money for the fence and trees might be better off just used for more benches along Market.

This "station" in front of the hotel is cold and windy and very uninviting. It is walled off to look like cafe seating, but alas, there is no visible cafe and certainly no visible cafe patrons. This space sits empty and deserted, just like my neighborhood for the most part. Although, I think it is a great improvement over the usual barren ... See Moresidewalks. If more of these pop up and people start to linger and actually start doing business and dining on Market street I expect the area will become very lively.

That's the gist of the front-page headline in the SF Examiner today, which suggests that Mayor Gavin Newsom has a bold plan to move all bus lines and the F-line historic streetcar line onto side streets to make way for a glorious pedestrian-and-bicycle-only zone on Market downtown. ...

I still remember how confused I was, visiting, driving a car down Market street. Or is that crawling? Years later, I started commuting on bike and wondered why would anybody *intentionally* drive their car down that stretch. Now it is a pure joy! Glad to hear that public transport has improved, as well.

Elihu, putting art in empty store fronts has been shown to encourage merchants back to fill the stores. This is why this project is being initiated. In Seattle, a whole street was vacant for a long time but when all empty storefronts were filled with art, every store was filled within a year.

By itself, adding art won't solve the problems with Market St. But combined with all the other measures being taken, I think it is a small chunk of the problem that we should at least try.

Hi Julie, that is correct, private vehicle restrictions only exist Eastbound on 8th and 6th Streets. This is not an outright ban.

Thank you for your thoughts on PR and outreach - we are working on it.
