Principles of a Yoga Practice: BREATHS, BANDHAS (locks) and DRISHTIS (focus points)
- Have you ever questioned yourself as to whether you are equipped enough before you start your yoga practice?
- Or have you made the proper preparations before you enter a class?
This is no reference to your yoga mat, your towel or a water bottle. It’s the awareness of the mind, body and soul that many people lack that end them with an unsatisfied practice. There are 3 main aspects for a yogi to ruminate before actually entering a classroom and to be assured of having a satisfied practice:
1. The Breaths – In Yoga, breathing is the most central and vital practice, as it is in our daily life. By simply becoming aware of its existence and distinction as we step onto our mats, we begin to strengthen and slow our breath.
The yogic breath teaches us to utilize our lungs to its full capacity. Because of poor posture and bad habits arising from unconscious carelessness, many of us breathe shallowly or with compressed lungs, depriving our body of essential oxygen. Furthermore, insufficient exhalation poisons the body by building up carbon dioxide in our system.
2. The Bandhas – Bandhas are inner knots or locks to hold pranic energy or psychic energy within certain areas in the body. Bandha maybe defined as a particular focussed and intentional action involving pressure, contraction of force on the muscles or some other bodily or sensate phenomena.
In yogic tradition, bandhas are to be studied, maintained and held principal whilst engaged in pranayama (breathing technique). Bandhas contribute to the lightness and depth of a yoga practice.
3. The Drishti – Drishtis are points of focus where the gaze rest during asana and meditation practice. Focusing on a drishti aids concentration, since it is easier to become distracted when the eyes are wandering all over the room. Each yoga pose has a specific drishti, which also aids in alignment. Drishtis are particularly emphasized in Ashtanga yoga. Even though a drishti can be described as a fixed gaze, the eyes should always stay soft, never straining.
The emphasis of this workshop is to draw awareness towards the above three aspects in order for us to have a fulfilling and satisfying practice.
