Black Hills Great question from a fan on our wall. via Derek Rasmussen - Looking to bring the horses to the hills next summer for some backcountry riding. Trail suggestions?

Derek Rasmussen

Derek Rasmussen I would like to plan a trip to the hills next summer with the horses. can anyone recomend what trails i should look into? difficulty is not much of an issue. i've been all over the hills several times in my life but never to much of the back country. this seems like a very good way to experience it.

Iron Creek has a great trail. It's my favorite. Lots of water crossings, not too rough on the hooves.

Black Hills Short notice, but if you're in the area this weekend, the Festival of Trees event Saturday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center should be fun.

Black Hills The first school built in the Black Hills is still standing - and open to visit. Glen Erin school is hidden on the west edge of Custer State Park. It's a great little area to explore.

OK - let's set the record straight. Thanks go to William Jacob Stone and Dennis McMillin for bringing the discrepancy to our attention. We just spoke with the Custer County Historical Society folks. They do claim the Glen Erin school to be the first country school building in Custer County, however not the first in the entire Black Hills region. ... There are definitely records of earlier schools than the Glen Erin in the hills, but not necessarily in Custer County. Thanks again for pointing it out, guys.

The "Dog 'N' Suds drive-in restaurant was on the corner of Canyon & Grant near the park. I worked there summers during high school. It's not there anymore, though.

Black Hills The Nemo Guest Ranch is what I refer to as a "real deal" place in the hills. It's history goes back to the late 1800s as a Homestake mining company town. Visiting there makes you feel like you're stepping back in time. It's a great place to grab breakfast or lunch. Read more: http://www.deadwoodmagazine.com/archivedsite/Archives/nemo.htm

We love it! During the summer months they're also open for dinner. Some of the BEST burgers in the Hills!!! We love the whole Nemo area so much that we bought land nearby and are gong to be building a log home and retiring there one day, hopefully not too far in the future!

Years ago I nearly killed the Nemo donkey. I was eating an ice cream bar, and the donkey was begging. So I thought I'd give him the last bite, sliding the stick out of his mouth as his teeth scraped off the ice cream. But he clamped down on the stick -- and ate it. My wife said, "Let's get out of here before he keels over." And we did.
