Andrew Mendez-Realtor Can I ask a question without being deleted or blocked from posting? I have heard time and time again, that this organization is a hate site, so I have given you guys the benefit of the doubt, but I have seen people ask genuine questions and asking for an explanation, only for the question to be deleted, and the person ...no longer to post. Why is that? Does this site discriminate against people who own guns? Or just criminals who use guns? Thank You

    • Richard J. Osborne This site is for people who believe that rational, effective regulation of weaponry is necessary and appropriate for an ordered, civil society. It is not for discussion of whether that belief is correct. Rather it is for discussion of how to obtain that goal. Gun advocates frequently try to engage in endless arguments on the validity of the conclusion. There are places for that debate. This isn't one of them.

Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence New blog from Brady VP Dennis Henigan on the Glenn Beck/NRA rally:

blog.bradycampaign.org
We now know that the National Rifle Association will be joining Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin for Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally at the Lincoln Memorial on the 47th Anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Is it possible to imagine a greater offense to the legacy of Dr. King?

I believe that all handguns should be banned forever. They were made to kill people not to hunt with. These guns are not for sport other than target practice.
These weapons are people killers, nothing more.
In England, there are strict laws on firearms. Th...e Bobbies don't even carry them.

Really there needs to be better focus to keep handguns and all guns out of criminal hands. If we start to separate our government from our law abiding citizens too far we will lose our public scrutiny that is extremely important. The crimin...al element and most of the guns are tied to other illegal activities that must be focused on. I am talking about allowing people to cross the borders illegally without the paperwork, without a job and without proper shots. The amount of criminals who were illegally here were more than 10 times that of all other races. We cannot continue to focus on the guns as much as the prevention of crime. I find a bit of irony involved when both sides of the gun issues seem to have the same stance on prevention of criminal activity, it is the methods that are most in dispute between the groups. Funny thing is with how powerful both of these groups are at some point if they both could come to the table it would assist is making these important changes and stop the petty fights at the capitol. I am told guns and animals bring in the most calls but there are so many more issues if only each side could develop a team who could come open minded in order to prevent criminal activity. Personal studies are irrelevant because they are less based on logic and more on emotions. Beliefs without facts are just speculation. I can maintain a fairly neutral stance enough to find a resolution but people from both sides who have substantial contributions do not get together except to fight. Change that and we will find the next anti-crime superpower. It takes more than one method or idea set to find most cures. This is not a "let's take away guns and it all goes away" issue. Our symptoms come from a multitude of issues not a single source such as a gun of any sort. Knives are used equally and so are bats, crowbars, cars and pepper sprays but we never hear of taking these defensive means away we focus on those that are seen in movies and video games. We lost the gun education we used to teach children so when they come across a gun as a teen it is a cool toy and they see themselves as the next superstar gangster. Change the images and educate on safe and proper handling of a firearm so the kids know this is not a toy. If you hide sex it will still exist and the same goes for a gun. Hiding them does not make them go away. Regulating them does nothing to stop a criminal most of the time because another state is still just hours away. Good luck with your fight, I hope I gave some food for thought on this tense illogical, emotional issue.See More

The campaign disclosure bill rejected today by the U.S. Senate was seriously flawed by its cynical exemption for the National Rifle Association, one of the largest players trying to influence public policy through its campaign expenditures. Such a measure did not deserve to pass in that form.

          • Andrew Goddard Nobody "won" with this decision, we just didn't loose what we could have lost. This bill needed to pass with NO EXCEPTIONS. We need to drain the money from political adds and get on with doing what is needed.

Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence Thanks to all who called your U.S. Senators about the DISCLOSE Act that would have given the NRA an exemption from new campaign finance disclosure laws, while requiring almost all others advocacy groups to follow those new laws. This exemption for the NRA made no sense! Thanks again!

          • Mary Fox I heard from a Libertarian that there are exemptions for other groups, not just the NRA. Is that true? I do not think that they should have one.
            Tuesday at 1:05pm ·
          • Teri Nilson Baird sounds too late for the bill, since they couldn't break the filibuster. It's time for the Senate to force a filibuster on the floor, rather than a "virtual" one. I would bet we'd have less of them!

Mary: initially the exemption was worded such that only the NRA would benefit, but after some early complaints the wording of the bill was broadened so that it now would also include 3 or 4 other groups, 2 or 3 of them "liberal". However, t...he bill doesn't specifically mention any group and never has; the exclusion was simply initially worded such that only the nra qualified for the exemption. Now, 3 or 4 other groups would qualify as well. That's probably why the Brady Campaign's post above reads "... requiring ALMOST all other groups....". See More

Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence Rep. Mike Quigley doesn't understand why Congress wants to protect guns from legal creditors while making them easily available to criminals and mentally ill. He says "It's time to stop pandering and start acting responsibly."

          • Richard J. Osborne Quigley is from Illinois-5- Rahm Emanuel's old, very safe, Democratic district. I'm giving him a small donation. He doesn't need our money, as his seat is safe, but we need to start sending the message pols can understand- money- that speaking and voting for effective, rational firearms regulation gets rewarded. If you want to do more than vent and have a few dollars, go to Act Blue and give him a few bucks online.

          • Scott Whitmire I'm not sure I understand what you're driving at Sue. I simply pointed out that this legislation, exemption and all, is owned 100% by the Democrats, and was principally authored in the House. Senate (and House-yes I realize they are the same party) Republicans had precisely nothing to do with crafting this legislation, and calling them corrupt for writing it makes no sense.

No, I am calling them (GOP) corrupt for not writing it and then opposing it at every turn. The NRA exemption, sad as it is, was added to give political contributions transparency at least a chance.

Cathy Piper-Lally Cheer up, felons of Virginia. The state won't allow you to vote (even after you've served your time), but you CAN buy assault rifles, semi-automatic weapons, and just about any other gun you'd like. I guess they figure you're less dangerous with weapons than you are as a voter. That's some sound logic.
