Even if we could improve enforcement of existing laws, should improved enforcement be the sum total of our national policy toward gun crime?

Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence The Wall Street Journal comments on the success of the gun violence prevention movement in keeping guns off our college campuses.
Source: online.wsj.com
Even on an issue as divisive as gun control, states may be nearing something resembling a national consensus: Guns don't belong in a college classroom.

Laurel at 7:36am July 8
It's about time we agreed on something as a nation on this topic. Guns definitely don't belong on our college campuses, for the same and for different reasons as they don't belong in our K-12 schools. While we're on the topic, why is there still a loophole in US law allowing states to determine whether someone with a permit to carry can bring a ... Read Moreloaded weapon right into the classroom? Seems as though if we agree about colleges, we should also eliminate the loopholes that still allow guns in schools in a handful of states, including New Hampshire.

So, first of all, I would definitely like to see real terrorists be unable to buy guns. Definitely. My problem, again, is with the definition of terrorist as used by our government today. Also, the Huffington Post supports my assertion that there are over 1 million names on the list and that 20,000 are being added every day. The following link will... Read More corroborate.

I see that it was the actual Brady Campaign person who asserted my information is incorrect. Also read former Mayor Paul Helmke's blogs at this post. He always was a closeted liberal hiding under the Republican cloak to get elected in Fort Wayne. Now, he's doing superb work on the national level. He and the Brady Campaign for sensible gun laws need our support.
Normand at 3:57pm July 7
NRA believers/supporrters don't care. They will hold to their mistaken beliefs no matter how many are killed. The Second Amendment trumps all reasonable statements related to even a hint of gun control, no matter how sensible we think our proposals are.

Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence
Today, on the 10th anniversary of the neo-Nazi killing of former Northwestern University basketball coach Ricky Byrdsong, the Legal Action Project is issuing a report, Guns and Hate: A Lethal Connection.
The report makes a powerful case that hate groups, inflammatory NRA rhetoric, and loopholes in our gun laws fuel shootings by dangerous extremists — and will continue to unless we enact strong, common sense gun laws

This is important reading.
Catherine at 10:23am July 2
This is terrifying reading. Mentally ill people, violently disturbed people, people with a grudge real or imagined, people with a criminal history......What is wrong with preventing them getting a gun? You wouldn't even hand them a sharp dinner knife if you knew them personally, let alone a gun.

Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence In his Huffington Post blog, Brady Center VP Dennis Henigan discusses the gun lobby's opposition to legislation preventing terrorists from buying firearms in the United States.
Source: www.huffingtonpost.com
Should suspected terrorists be blocked from buying guns before they commit a violent crime? The gun lobby apparently doesn't think so.
Wendy at 1:20pm June 30
Wow, that's such a no brainer, I really don't know what to say.
Myra at 6:49pm June 30
One of my friends is an intern here this summer!
Normand at 9:43pm June 30
Should we be surprised? The NRA is probably in favor of selling guns to minors and gang members. Why wouldn't they be in favor of selling guns to terrorists? A sale is a sale. Any gun sales ($$$)=more money for the NRA. It's all about money.

Firearms sales in New Jersey would be limited to no more than one per month under controversial legislation that had stalled earlier this year but won final approval early this morning in the rush before the Legislature's summer recess.

Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence During the summer, many high school groups come to visit our organization. Pictures from this event are just an example of just one of the educational tools that the Brady Campaign uses to inform students about current and proposed federal gun laws.
Karen at 6:42pm June 24
Nope, don't ban all guns. They're used by real hunters (not the fake NRA lobbyist types). Reasonable restrictions include: universal background checks, including resales by owners (take to nearest FFL for background check and certification of sale); adjudicated records for serious brain diseases-depression, bipolar, etc; unrestricted law ... Read Moreenforcement searches to trace guns; gun safety training for all owners; limit magazine capacity to less than 10 rounds; stamp bullets for tracing for shooting crimes;limit one gun a month and all sales tracked to enforce one gun/month nationally; straw purchasers criminally liable for felonies commited with gun they purchased. What am I leaving out?
Lori at 4:29pm June 26
To Neil: It's all about being sensible. Some restriction will save lives. I really don't believe that the law should allow loopholes that help criminals or kids to get guns. Not sure why this is ok with you . . . . .. It's not about banning, it's about owners taking responsibility for what happens with their guns and keeping criminals away from them.

With confirmation hearings for Judge Sonia Sotomayor scheduled for next month, it is worth noting the gun lobby's disingenuous and surprisingly muted reaction to her nomination so far.On the eve of those hearings, the National Rifle Association still has not decided whether to score Senate votes...

The Government Accountability Office released a report today about the trafficking of American guns to Mexican criminals. In a statement, President Paul Helmke said, "It should be clear today that our weak gun laws pose not only a public safety crisis at home, but also a foreign policy crisis across our southern border."

John at 2:14pm June 18
Let's be realistic: stronger gun laws, all other benefits aside, would have no significant impact on the ability of Mexican criminals to acquire firearms. They would only be imported from elsewhere. The best solution is partial decriminalization of certain drugs which would reduce profits and incentives for large criminal enterprises. Of course this is nothing more than an academic exercise since such a solution would be politically unpopular.

Usually they will come up with some absurd claims or stats that they interpret to mean that states with more gun restrictions have more crime and states with less restrictions have less crime. They like to point out another complete fallacy that millions of people on the street have foiled a holdup by pulling out a gun as in self-defense. Then ... Read Morethey throw in the 2nd amendment which they equate to everyone on earth having the right to breathe. I'm afraid we will never get through to them.
