: The Brett Whiteley Studio is managed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Nestled among the cafés and laneways, warehouses and terrace houses of the inner-Sydney suburb of Surry Hills, the Brett Whiteley Studio  offers a rare and intimate insight into the art and life of one of the most celebrated and intensely creative artists of 20th-century Australia.

Passionate, charismatic, wild, gifted, troubled, prolific; Whiteley was a unique and extraordinary artistic spirit and his studio concentrates everything that made him so in one place. A converted T-shirt factory, it remained as Whiteley’s living, working and exhibition space until his death in June 1992.

Today, it houses changing exhibitions of the artist’s works and, upstairs, his living quarters with personal belongings such as old photographs, postcards, furniture, sketchbooks and his book and music collection. Upstairs also contains the studio itself, with brushes, a paint-splattered floor and an unfinished painting leaning against the wall. It’s as if he has just stepped out.

CURRENT EXHIBITION: Iconic Whiteley
12 September 2009 – 4 April 2010
This collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings at the Whiteley Studio represents many facets of Brett Whiteley’s career. Several works are well-known favourites from his early success in Europe and Australia, from his late teens and early twenties, including the Abstraction, Christie and Zoo series, through to his popular Lavender Bay, Paris and Bird series. It provides a unique opportunity to display such rare masterpieces across the artist’s entire career.

Emma Katherine Davie Aiaraisa I love brett whiteleys studio - thanks for the inspiring space in which we get to see how this amazing man lived and worked.
I loved the difficult pleasure dvd and only wish there was more to see.
The staff at the studio are very very accomodating and friendly and have created a wonderful artist space in which we can all share.
I hope to see it again someday.

Marc Magnee It's a distant memory now but I recall glimpsing Brett duck into a coffee shop in Victoria St, Darlinghurst in 1989. He was smiling.
