buildOn On December 7, 2009, buildOn, together with several other agencies, is partnering with The Overlake School, in Redmond, WA as it hosts Nicholas Kristof, New York Times columnist and co-author of "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide". Mr. Kristof will be speaking from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at ...Overlake.

Overlake is also hosting a Global Service Fair in conjunction with the lecture, featuring an open house from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. with its event partners. In addition to buildOn, representatives from Ayni Education International, CARE Seattle, Kiva, Global Partnership, Washington Global Health Alliance, Mercy Corps, Rwanda Girls Initiative, Grameen Foundation and Overlake Global Service will be there and provide information about the work that they do.

Copies of "Half the Sky" will be on sale that evening and Mr. Kristof will sign books.

A suggested donation at the door benefits The Overlake School Global Service program: $10 for adults; $5.00 for students and 65 years and over. There are no advance ticket sales.

The Overlake School is located at 20301 NE 108th Street, Redmond, WA For questions about the event, please contact Randi Hedin, buildOn Seattle Chapter at randi.hedin@gmail.com or 425-233-7162.

Heading to Haiti this morning thinking about past buildOn projects and a question that many people often ask: Why is Haiti so poor? Here are some pics of before, during and after construction, and a link to an interesting essay about the complexity of Haiti's current state. If you want to learn about why Haiti is currently the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, read this: http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/haiti/misctopic/leftover/whypoor.htm

buildOn staff in Nicaragua often talk about this school building when discussing why we do what we do. The school on the left was the existing school, and the one on the right was the one buildOn and the community in Los Rincones built in 2006. In Nicaragua, buildOn has built 47 schools since 2001, many of them in collaboration with U.S. high school students from buildOn programs.

Vanessa Liles

Vanessa Liles buildOn would like to thank The New York Women’s Foundation and Girl’s Inc for inviting eight of buildOn NY’s finest young ladies to develop stronger leadership skills at their Annual Girl’s Leadership Day at Hunter College in Manhattan. The girls went to workshops on budgeting, credit, giving back, and preparing for ...college. There was also a networking lunch where the girls sat with professional women in finance positions or entrepreneurs where they all shared who they were and their life decisions that led them to their current success. Pictured are Stanisha, Elizabeth, LaShawanna, Roseena, and Danisia and they attend International Arts and Business high school and School for Human Rights in Brooklyn, Manhattan Center for Math and Science and Health Opportunities High School in the Bronx. Thanks Ladies!
