Growing up in Berlin made for a lot of unique childhood experiences. For example, whenever a class trip took us outside of the city it required a stop, sometimes for several hours at the border. We would wait while the guards with machine guns slung over their shoulders walked up and down the bus isle checking every child’s passport and travel documentation.

The wall came down when I was in the 8th grade. That morning started out just like any other, but within a few minutes of arriving at school the news began to spread amongst the students. It seemed like there had been no fore-warning, no lead-up, it just happened – all of a sudden.

The government tried to “open” the wall in an orderly manner, but ultimately the city went crazy. There was an around-the-clock party down at the Brandenburger Tor that lasted several days. Over the next couple of days at school, I got goose bumps listening to classmates tell of meeting grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. for the first time ever- those family members who happened to be on the wrong side of the Wall when it went up.... Calvin’s calendar is filled with the usual Halloween events this year: Light in the Night, a trick-or-treat fest for community kids, a masquerade dance and countless residence hall floor activities. But alongside these events are others celebrating Reformation Day: two special chapel services, an open house at the H. H...enry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies (complete with a quiz and prizes), an art gallery showing, two lectures and a performance by the Boston Camerata.Read More

For those who would like a student perspective on how Calvin addresses faith and evolution see this blog called An Evangelical Dialogue on Evolution and a post today by a Calvin grad now a Ph.D. student at Michigan. It's well worth reading, especially the last two paragraphs under Evolution and My Faith.

Agreed. We have a pretty amazing faculty. Marjorie has done her own spanking research and found interesting differences culturally in terms of how spanking works. She has other colleagues in psychology who study alcohol abuse in adolescents, religious formation in teens, birth defects, sleep patterns. Lots of good stuff. See:
