He’s sold more than 250 million books — but even John Grisham is worried about the future of the printed word in the wake of best-sellers going for as little as $9 at major retailers, and the rise of e-book readers like the Kindle. “It’s a disaster in the long term,” he said Tuesday.

No! I won't stand for it! Computer screens give me headaches, for one thing. And I want a book I can put comments in with a Ticonderoga #2 pencil. Case closed. (Note: I would never, ever dream of doing that with a library book, of course.)

No. Books are a necessary part of our civilization.

There are libraries and bookstores all over the world, and there will always be people who support them.

People who love to read love books will always have them, and fight for the right to keep them and read them.... Read More

There's just no substitution for a good book. Paper and soul is much better than screen and scroll.

. . . It's like the difference between a 'real' friend (book) and a 'Facebook friend' (electronic/digital 'book')

LOL!

Once again... great pictures! I can't wait to walk around with all the natural sunlight coming in those amazing windows... and I do wish they would put those circle display things all over the entire library. One question... are you going to be putting in a new and/or larger bike rack area?

Response from Library Director Susan Henricks: Yes, we will have a new bike rack. It will resemble the appearance of the railings that we have at the steps to the historic entrance and will accommodate 7 bicycles. It will not be on this "sea" of concrete, but will be surrounded by green space. Unfortunately because of the weather, this part of ... Read Morethe project will not be started until spring.

About the "circle display things" are you referring to the one that is currently not filled in the non-fiction area? The circular motif will be peppered through-out – the idea came from the Rotunda. We will have one more circular display and it will be just beyond the entrance to the children's area (which will be down the hall from the elevator.) The children's play area will also be circular in theme with the round benches and the glass at the top which will also have inscriptions from children's books. The circular theme is picked up somewhat in the entrance to the Teen Zone.

Monday, November 2, 2009, is a good day for library folks being mentioned in the Telegraph Herald.

Adult Services Librarian Mike May made the front page article “Meet your online neighbors: Bloggers feature posts about life in Dubuque.” Mike’s personal blog “The Dubuquer” highlights media references to Dubuque. You ca...n find his blog at
http://dubuquer.wordpress.com. Mike is also the creator of Carnegie-Stout’s Adult Services’ blog, which is located at http://www.dubuque.lib.ia.us/blog/blog.asp.

On page 3 of Section A, Library Board of Trustees’ member David Hammer has a write up titled “Have you heard? Tidbits of news from the Tri-states. Magazine profiles Dubuque attorney”. Hammer, also the author of 26 books, has served on the Library Board since August 2008. The October issue of Iowa Lawyer has an article about Hammer’s legal and writing careers. His most recent book For the Record: My Name is Hammer can be checked out from the Library.
