The CCRI Players will present, “The Threepenny Opera,” the classic musical by Bertolt Brecht (libretto and lyrics) and Kurt Weill (music), adapted by Marc Blitzstein on Dec. 3, 4, 5, and 6 in the Bobby Hackett Theater at the Knight Campus in Warwick. Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturda…y, and 2 p.m. on Sunday. This is the second production of the CCRI Players’ 2009-10 season. Call (401) 825-2219 for tickets.
Set in CCRI’s production in post-Victorian London, “The Threepenny Opera” spins the tale of Macheath, an outlaw known as Mack the Knife. Mack marries Polly Peachum, the daughter of the leader of Soho’s underworld, but he is betrayed by his in-laws and is sent to Newgate Prison. After being freed by Lucy Brown, the police chief’s daughter, Mack is again betrayed, this time by the prostitute Jenny. Sentenced to be hanged, Mack receives a last-minute reprieve from the king, thus providing the play with a mock-heroic ending. In his typical fashion, however, Brecht reminds his audience that “in real life, the ending isn’t quite so fine.” As composer Kurt Weill wrote in a letter to his wife Lotte Lenya (the original Jenny) in 1945, “By showing with biting humor what the world would be like if it were inhabited by crooks and hypocrites, ‘The Threepenny Opera’ does more good than all the dreams of noble souls.”
The CCRI Players’ production is directed by Jeffrey A. Butterworth. Set design is by Luke J. Sutherland, with costume design by Brandy Lee Silva, and lighting and sound design by Mick Jones. The student cast features Antonio Rodrigues as Macheath; Laura Minadeo as Jenny; Corey Mulvey as Mr. Peachum; Kristin Arsenault as Mrs. Peachum; Jessica Schloesser as Polly Peachum; MacKenzie Medwin as Lucy Brown; Thomas McCormick as Tiger Brown; and Benjamin Lovejoy as the Street Singer. Members of the ensemble include Brittany Dyer, Adam M. Florio, Lisa Maiorano, Angela Scheivert, Michael James Shaw, Brettny St. Peter, Cody Wilson, and Arthur Sylvester-McCarthy.
