People wonder why atheists are vocal and "raise a fuss". The sort of people in this article spend no time considering other perspectives, because in their world, they are right and their acts are righteous. Everyone else is wrong, or worse, has an evil agenda. Sad.

Francesca- I agree, the author is bringing up valid questions that need to be asked.

Islam is a factor to be considered here. And while I think the author downplayed the influence of significant psychological factors, I agree that such issues shouldn't be used as an excuse. Major Hasan is an adult who made the decision to enlist. If he had reservations about the job, or if his colleagues saw that he was mentally unbalanced, somebody should have done something BEFORE this tragedy took place.

Oh, and Matt- You are absolutely right about the harassment and racism Muslims dealt with after 9/11 being worse than that article indicated.

I'm surprised that Italy had the courage to rule in favor of secularists, but I glad to know that the world does change, ever so slowly.

The court was not talking about a ruling by the European court of human rights, as to what can be done in Italy, a civil state, not what can be done in Vatican City, an independent theocratic state.

I don't see how they are to get through with such expectation. For the EU Court to ban the crosses, the court would also have to ban the burkas. They cannot do either thing. Europe will have a majority of Moslems by 2050 anyways, and the crosses will possibly have expired by then, through the effects of natural selection.

I don't think ether heaven or hell is the motivation for most folks who are really deeply involved with "god" There are emotional reasons that nontheists totally discount that are far stronger for most converts IMO as a former "converted" Xtian.

I believe using derision will only incline individuals to cling to their beliefs, also keeping quiet will allow the world to continue to disenfranchise atheists who have a different idea of morality.
