Presumably teenagers will be won over in the same way as anyone else. They always have. No reason to condescend to any fragile feelings there. For that matter, insults and confrontation do appeal to many teenagers, at least the ones I've known; there's a reason protests and demonstrations aren't usually led by the greybeards. There's a time to be militant, and a time to be quietly persuasive. There's a time to be aggressive -- when faced with aggression -- and a time to be serene. No great wisdom here, though it seems to escape some.

As for Tom Paine, good example there if you really want to learn about history. (And "nationalistic"? Bit of a misfire in the epithet department. Good thesaurus can cure that.) When he wrote "The Age of Reason" he was in the business of irritating powers to the point where his life was in danger, and he wasn't especially sorry. Lucky for all freethinkers, of his day and ours, that he didn't hunker down in his La-Z-Boy and say "Well ... who am I to even hint at how people should think about god and government?"

What he actually said was, "I do not mean by this declaration to condemn those who believe otherwise; they have the same right to their belief as I have to mine. But it is necessary to the happiness of man that he be mentally faithful to himself."... See More

So: be faithful, and cringe not.

Life is not about faith. It is about truth, and the pursuit of it. At least to me. Maybe my individualism has run rampant, but loving who we are, respecting ourselves should matter.

If you honestly only want meaningless numbers on our side, maybe you should recruit the homeless. Maybe start indoctrinating newborns? Quality over quantity. I am 18. I was not won over by outlandish slogans, I was won over by Paul Kurtz's words of rationality, by CFI's deep philosophies. This is just a form of propaganda. It's not going to win over the intellectuals, in fact, I think they'll see through the smoke screen and simply see the strategy to win them over.

Even if the philosophies are still there, they have been poisoned by such cheap tactics. ... See More

Life is not about denying religion. If we make it about that, we are simply forming another channel of attention towards religion. We need to make our lives about nature, reality, and all their spawn. That is noble, beautiful, and meaningful.

Since Darwin doesn't command the universe, and since natural selection is a mindless process that cannot be described as intelligent, then I'm at a loss about this cartoon too.
