World-building is tricky at short-story length – but Stross squeezes some fascinating worlds into this collection

Charles Stross I'm pleased to announce that I will be a Guest of Honour at next year's Readercon, along with Nalo Hopkinson.

Many of us look to speculative fiction to show us worlds, cultures, and minds different from the formulaic; the writing of Nalo Hopkinson does this superbly well.

A small, informal gathering, no more than a dozen people, where fans, admirers, budding writers and directors, or anyone else for that matter, get to spend an hour or so chatting with like minded others in the company of someone who can give them really informed insight into the work they do.

SCI-FI LONDON are happy to ...make these small gatherings FREE OF CHARGE to anyone who attends but the catch is that, because numbers are very limited, they are first-come, first-served. You should act fast if you want the chance to attend filling in the form on the other end of this linkRead More

Charles Stross will be signing Merchant Princes Book Five: The Revolution Business at the Forbidden Planet Megastore, 179 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, WC2H 8JR, on Friday 1st May from 1 - 2pm.

Things are going badly for the Clan. Locked in a vicious civil war, their army is bottled up inside a besieged fortress in two pa...rallel universes at once. Duke Angbard, the Clan's leader, has been laid low by a stroke: plotters are already conspiring in readiness for the deadly dance to come. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the Clan, researchers working for the US government have achieved a technological breakthrough. The War on Terror is about to go trans dimensional.

If you can't make it, signed copies are available if you pre-order. Check the Forbidden Planet web site for details.

With the rise of the database state and firms profiting from user-profiling, it’s vital to resist surveillance and ensure the integrity of your digital personality. From technologies like PGP and Tor to the arguments that will convince people - friends and family as well as media and politicians - to watch out for thei...r digital rights, this event is your anti-surveillance 101.

Cory Doctorow - science fiction novelist, blogger and technology activist - and Charlie Stross - science fiction writer and former programmer and pharmacist - will share how and why to control your data. The event will be moderated by Ian Brown - academic, activist and Blogzilla.

The entry price is either joining Open Rights Group - by handing door staff a completed form (link to PDF) - or making a one-off £10 donation on the door. Please register for tickets here.
