HE: Do they believe we have a right to clean air, clean water, and vibrant natural resources in our public spaces? If the answer is yes, then regulations on agricultural polluters, air polluters, and land ...

What about making the Chesapeake Bay a National Park? Sound like a modest proposal? We need to ask our politicians to consider this. In 2002 there was an attempt under a Republican administration to get this started. Some interesting links:

As you can see we already have several waterways that are national parks near urban areas (Cape Cod, C&O Canal), cruise lanes (Glacier Bay), and intercoastal waterways (Cape Hatteras). No reason why the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed can't be made into a National Park. We should at minimum insist each state in the watershed to build its own areas for National Park Service preservation. Also it looks like the polluters of the bay will have a program like Kyoto with a system of credits to establish pollution limits. And don't forget even Yosemite has an urban blight, it is called Hetch Hechy Reservior:

EPA will establish and oversee achievement of a strict "pollution diet" known as a Total Maximum Daily Load, or TMDL, to remove excess pounds of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment harming the Bay and its network of waterways. ...

I think the Chesapeake Bay Foundation needs to do more to stop the InterCounty Connector. Writing the Montgomery County Council, most of them are opposed to it. The Audubon Naturalist Society has evidence of massive runoff pollution from the construction of the InterCounty Connector, and it is only going to get worse. ...The governor thinks that even though he has only spent a third of the necessary amount to complete it, it is too late to stop it. I say no. We need existing roads to be redecked, education revamped, police department protection reinvigorated in Montgomery County, and all that money that is being wasted on the InterCounty Connector could be used to revamp the county's budget in key areas. And the fact road contractors already are on the ICC, means you don't have to find workers able to fix the roads that need desperate fixing. You just redirect their jobs to places like University Blvd, Colesville Road, and Wayne Avenue that are in desperate need for repair.Read More

Chesapeake Bay Foundation EPA is scheduled to release its new plan for cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay on Monday. Preliminary reports suggest the proposal could include more federal oversight of state cleanup efforts, and tighter controls for stormwater runoff and animal intensive farming. I couldn't agree more with the regulation of the animal intensive farming. Let's look at where the most loadings come from instead of targeting the "easy pickings".

It's about time that the federal gov't steps up to the plate and tries to get the issues under control. The watershed incluces 6 states and someone needs to make sure everyone is on the same page and taking part in restoration efforts. And these huge poultry companies need to be forced into dealing with the chicken waste!

Chesapeake Bay Foundation Pennsylvania's environmental secretary calls the recent gas drilling boom a "game changer" for the nation's energy future. But in the wake of violations, chemical spills, a fish kill and explosion, John Hanger says the industry must also be "watch dogged." Interview at www.cbf.org/baydaily

I had no clue how this was being done, or the impact it has on the environment. This is not good. Are there any cleaner alternatives to this extraction process?

Hopefully States and interested organizations can be more proactive in the future. Many small companies are popping up along Appalachia tapping the rich resources that will help us become less dependent on foreign resources.
