Ben Gibson I just became a fan today of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. I am the Innkeeper of Sandaway Waterfront Lodging in Oxford, Maryland. The health of the Chesapeake Bay is very important to me and my guests. Sandaway has a private sandy beach for B&B guests to enjoy. Visit my profile and follow Sandaway on facebook. We just created our facebook page this month.

We are all dependent on our upstream neighbors to send clean water to us, and we all have a responsibility to provide clean water to our downstream neighbors. This applies in our streams and rivers as well as in the regional Chesapeake Bay watershed.

This morning I stopped off at Piscataway Park off of Bryan's Landing Road in PG County. I was there to view a relatively-rare bird, an Eared Grebe, which was swimming and diving in the river just as my friends had described.
Sadly, this river was absolutely disgusting. It was hard to tell a Wigeon from an old shopping... bag or a Gadwall from a rusty old oil can.
TRASH. Everything from plastic bottles to wrappers, beers cans to giant plastic trashcans. You name it... it was all floating down the river or washed up on the river banks. The sight of it could best be described as absolutely awful. Oh, and I should mention that just there in the background was George Washington's home. There stood Mount Vernon high on the hill, overlooking a majestic river of garbage.Read More

Chesapeake Bay Foundation Construction of new poultry houses on Maryland's eastern shore has been on hold since February because of newly-enforced federal pollution control regulations. But that could change on Dec. 1, when Maryland issues its new rules for manure runoff. What do you think about this? Who should regulate poultry waste -- the federal or state governments? Or nobody? Chesapeake Bay Foundation
RICHMOND, VA. – The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is seeking volunteers to help plant 700 trees along a Louisa County creek on Saturday, November 21, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The volunteers are needed to help establish a forested “buffer” beside the creek, which drains into the South Anna River, a tributary of the ...Pamunkey and York rivers, and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. Trees, shrubs, and grasses planted along the banks of streams help trap and filter soil and harmful pollutants before they can run off and degrade water quality downstream and in Chesapeake Bay. The trees also help shade the water, stabilize erosion, and provide food and shelter for wildlife.
Volunteers should dress for the weather, wearing layers of clothes to adjust for variable weather conditions, and bring a hat, sturdy shoes, work gloves, a shovel or garden spade, plenty of water to drink, and a travel mug to enjoy hot chocolate that CBF will have on site. Volunteers may also want to pack a brown-bag lunch to eat after the planting.
Volunteers can RSVP and get directions to the planting site by contacting Jess Barton at 804/780-1392 or emailing jbarton@cbf.org.
Editors: Accompanying CBF photograph is generic example of volunteer tree planting. Coverage/photography of the actual Nov. 21 planting event is welcome. Please contact Chuck Epes, 804/780-1392 or email cepes@cbf.org .

What about making the Chesapeake Bay a National Park? Sound like a modest proposal? We need to ask our politicians to consider this. In 2002 there was an attempt under a Republican administration to get this started. Some interesting links:

As you can see we already have several waterways that are national parks near urban areas (Cape Cod, C&O Canal), cruise lanes (Glacier Bay), and intercoastal waterways (Cape Hatteras). No reason why the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed can't be made into a National Park. We should at minimum insist each state in the watershed to build its own areas for National Park Service preservation. Also it looks like the polluters of the bay will have a program like Kyoto with a system of credits to establish pollution limits. And don't forget even Yosemite has an urban blight, it is called Hetch Hechy Reservior:
