Sharon Jackson Last night's panel was wonderful. The venue, although lovely, was not a great location for speakers. Many listeners had trouble hearing.

I have to agree with you. The rows were also crowded very close together, which made it uncomfortable. But I did enjoy the panel very much, especially the interchange at the end. It was also great to see so many docents there!

Thank you! Yes, I thought it was a really interesting and insightful panel discussion. I agree, the venue was beautiful. We did hear some similar feedback about some attendees not being able to hear the speakers clearly. An audio of the event will be available soon...I'll pass along more information as soon as possible.

In an era of rising energy costs and concern about the environment, legislators and citizens, alike, are pushing to change the way Americans travel. Many agree that the best alternative to the automobile is rail transport: it relieves congestion, cuts dependence on foreign oil, and reduces pollution. The aim of this pa...nel is to examine the rail plans that most directly impact the Chicago region, including the proposed Midwest high-speed rail network, the CREATE Regional Rail Plan, and the Regional Transportation Authority’s investments in the expansion of Metra and the CTA.

Panelists include: Luann Hamilton, Deputy Commissioner, Chicago Department of Transportation; Rick Harnish, Executive Director, Midwest High Speed Rail Association; and Mark Walbrun, head of the Passenger Rail and Transit division, TranSystems. The panel will be moderated by Joe Schwieterman, Ph.D., Professor, DePaul University, and Director, Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development.

COST $15 general public; $10 CAF Members; $5 students with valid ID

Join the Chicago Architecture Foundation for an evening program with prominent architecture critics. The event is part of the Chicago Model City exhibition and the joint meeting of the Architecture + Design Education Network (A+DEN) and the Association of Architecture Organizations (AAO).

Discussion will focus on the fu...ture of cities and the global issues they face such as climate change, political transition, and economic shift. The critics will explore current trends in urban planning and architecture; how planning trends have changed in response to the changing notion of what constitutes a model city; what opportunities the Obama administration offers American cities; and why some cities promote innovative design and support the work of young designers.

Panel participants include Jonathan Glancey (The Guardian), Paul Goldberger (The New Yorker), Sarah Williams Goldhagen (The New Republic), and Blair Kamin (The Chicago Tribune). The panel will be moderated by Edward Lifson, cultural critic and founder of Chicago Public Radio's Hello Beautiful.

This program is part of the Chicago Architecture Foundation's Visionary Cities series. Visit http://www.architecture.org/programs.html#visionary for more information on this series and specific program.

Join the growing list of your colleagues who educate the public about architecture and design, and attend this year’s A+DEN/AAO conference.

Come to Chicago November 5 -7, and discuss new issues and ideas, share with others who are engaged in architecture and design education of our youth and public, and learn about sta...rting the public dialogue about the built environment.

A+DEN is a collaborative association of like-minded organizations in the fields of architecture and design, committed to promoting innovative architecture and design education for teachers and students in grades K-12. The founding partners (the American Architectural Foundation and the Chicago Architecture Foundation) each have more than 40 years of experience developing educational programs that introduce school-aged youth and their teachers to the built environment.

During a time of unprecedented interest in architecture and the built environment, the Association of Architecture Organizations (AAO) is being established to serve as a member-based service organization for the non-profit architecture and design field.

Though there are other national architecture and built environment organizations, none have the mission and vision to foster a strong network of like-minded non-profit organizations in order to strengthen, professionalize, and further the goals of the field.
