Church World Service A personal note of thanks from the Director of Church World Service --
“I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers.” Eph. 1:16

We live in challenging economic times, which makes your support for Church World Service all the more valuable! So, as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, I give th...anks for you. Without your efforts, the life-saving work of Church World Service could not continue.

Your contributions, whether as a participant in a CROP Hunger Walk or as a donor to CWS, are crucial ingredients in realizing the mission of CWS: to build a world where there is enough for all. On this Thanksgiving Day, let us recommit ourselves to that hope!

May you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Yours in service,

Rev. John L. McCullough
Executive Director and CEO
Church World Service

P.S. I'd like to share with you my personal reflection for this season and--while Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday--two prayers from international colleagues that capture for me the spirit of the occasion. Please feel free to share them at your table.

Church World Service Check out this blog! The author, Samantha Briggs, is in Johannesburg, South Africa, through December on assignment with the Refugee Ministries Centre (RMC). CWS supports the RMC and deployed Briggs to help strengthen the RMC's capacity in monitoring and evaluation, volunteer recruitment and training, and fundraising. ...The RMC provides legal assistance for asylum seekers, monitors their access to the refugee status determination process, and looks out for their human rights.

Church World Service Give us this day our daily bread. All good gifts of the earth come from your generous hands, God. Yet, this abundance is not shared equally among us. While some are satisfied, others are starving... If only we would be mindful that each and every one of us must pray: Give us this day our daily bread. --World Day of Prayer Committee, Myanmar

I cannot forget the most fearful experience of my life, Oct. 8, 2005. I was living in Abbottabad, Pakistan. I grew up there and an earthquake changed the city I knew well, forever.

Sigh...we have a humanatarian problem relating to how we walk and do justice. I am afraid you have chose a particular pathway to this (concentrating on a political solution) that is going to harm the wonderful work you do worldwide. Do what you feel called to - but I am afraid we will lose some foundational support over your stance.

Thanks for your input and being a partner. This story isn't the whole representation of our work on climate change. While we do advocate at the international, political level, we also work to make our food, water & sheltering programs environmentally responsible and adaptable to a changing climate. We also work to make sure climate change is recognized as THE hunger issue of our time, and that those who are most vulnerable to its effects have a voice.

If friends or family members say, "Oh, don't give us anything this season," this year more gift-givers may take the suggestion not literally but alternatively.

I have interspersed my "real" gift-giving with "alternate" gift-giving for a couple-three years, and now my family is finally doing the same for me. I would rather help put food on someone's table (through Heifer International) or "adopt" a pet from the Humane Society or Best Friends Animal Sanctuary than to receive a new sweater. Alternate gift-... See Moregiving makes me feel like I am doing something for the world and my family is doing something good for the world in my name. Alternate gift-giving is so much more meaningful than getting the latest gadget!
